Saturday 9 -- On the Radio

It's time for Saturday 9

Saturday 9: On the Radio (1979)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) The action begins when a letter falls out of the pocket of a brown overcoat. What color is your coat?

The one I wear most of the time is olive green.  I have a very heavy black coat for extreme weather, and a black lighter-weight coat.

2) The lyrics ask if it "kinda strikes you sad when you hear our song." We don't want to be sad this Saturday, so we're asking what song makes you happy.

Most music makes me happy.  Pick just one?  Oh, OK.  Today I'm thinking of this one:

3) Right before this song hit the charts, Donna Summer hit the cover of Newsweek. Are there any magazines in your home now? If yes, who is on the cover?

I've gone digital, so no magazines at home.  The last magazine I loaded to the nook app on my iPad didn't have anyone on the cover.

4) Donna wrote the lyrics to this song, while producer Giorgio Moroder wrote the tune. Moroder is known as "the father of disco." Is disco a genre you enjoy?

I was 17 and the very first R rated movie I ever saw was Saturday Night Fever.  I had to buy the soundtrack!  Must have worn it out, I played it over and over....

5) This song got additional airplay throughout the 1980s because the game show The Price Is Right played it every time a contestant won a stereo. Today, the most popular audio equipment sold at Best Buy is a sound bar to improve the quality of TV audio. Have you added a sound bar or sound system to your TV?

Nope.  But you should see the sound system in Drew's living room.  He's got everything wired into these speakers....

6) Moroder has won two Academy Awards for Best Song. The first was for "Flashdance ... What a Feeling" from Flashdance and the second was for "Take My Breath Away" from Top Gun. Do you  have a favorite movie soundtrack?

Again you ask me to pick just one?  Well, OK.

7) He grew up in Ortsei, Italy. Located in Northern Italy, the Ortsei economy is fueled by tourists who ski in winter, hike in summer and shop for woodcarvings all year around. Do out-of-towners find their way to your hometown more often in summer or winter?

I live on Long Island.  The town I live in is very suburban, not at all interesting to tourists.

However, Long Island has a lot more to offer tourists in the summer months than in winter -- we have amazing beaches and parks.  I often go in the off-season, when there are no crowds, to enjoy the quiet beauty of it all.

Here are some off-season photos I took at various times at the famous Jones Beach State Park:

There are mosaics in the walkway at Central Mall.  this one is a map of Long Island.

This bird just wanted to pose for me.

The famous Water Tower:

We cannot forget the Jones Beach Theater.  I've seen some amazing concerts there.  Rod Stewart, Jimmy Buffett, John Fogerty, Stevie Nicks, the Rascals....

And here's some video I shot in March 2017:

Met this guy at Jones Beach one October, during the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event:

Yeah, that's me with the Senator in 2011.

8) Kourtney Kardashian was born in 1979, the year this record was a hit. Keeping Up with the Kardashians has been on since 2007. Have you ever seen it?

Kourtney who?

9) Random question -- When getting dressed in the morning, what's the second item of clothing you put on?

LOL, I'll never tell...

  3. My best friend is from LI and I have a ton of old friends in 5 towns. But man does Long Island have undertow. Rough stuff in that surf. I loved the videos. If it's beach I love it!
What a cool photo of you and Chuck Schumer there. I saw him from a distance when he was in Lakewood by me a long time ago raising money for something or other.

    1. He showed up at the event to greet all the walkers, and I had to take a photo.

  6. 2nd item of clothing you put on... Wow, I'm now trying to figure out what my answer to that question is, and I'm not sure. I'm going to have to pay better attention tomorrow morning.
