Music Monday

It’s another “your choice” week,   And today I am playing  the music of a man who has succeeded as both a solo artist and as a member of a famous quartet. Yes, today’s post features music you won’t find on Spotify.  Today I am playing the music of Neil Young. Let’s start with a few from CSNY. This one was written by Joni Mitchell about a little music festival …    And here they are at Farm Aid.    This was a solo hit.   More from Farm Aid    And we close it out with “Heart of Gold”

All of Me Welcome to  Saturday: 9 . What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to  answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions! Saturday 9: All of Me (1932) Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it  here . 1) In this song, Louis Armstrong calls his girl "baby." What's the last endearment someone used when speaking to you? In my family we don't tend to use terms of endearment.  We do tell each other that we love each other, but we don't use words like "sweetie" or "dear" or "honey"  -- especially "honey", because  I have a sister named Honey.   2)

Another icon has died.  And this one felt like a punch to the gut. Less than a year after  Jim Steinman  passed away, Marvin Lee Aday, known to the world as Meat Loaf, has died. He first came to our attention in The Rocky Horror Picture Show . But he captured our attention two years later, with his debut album. The title cut    The controversial "Paradise By the Dashboard Light", with the infamous commentary by Phil Rizzuto.  There are people who believe Rizzuto didn't know what he was really describing, that he didn’t understand the sexual innuendo.  Riiight....   Meat’s background in acting gave his music a theatrical tone that really added depth to his videos. You can see it in "Read 'Em and Weep"   "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" "I Would do Anything For Love"    And we close it out with this song, the first song written for Bat Out of Hell . I guess Heaven got tired of waiting...

Let’s Go Islanders!

Image
Way back in the 70’s and 80’s, everyone on Long Island was into hockey.  After all, our Islanders won four Stanley Cups …four in a row! 79-80, 80-81, 81-82 and 82-83. Back then they played at the Nassau Coliseum, a facility owned by Nassau County. The Coliseum is located on Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale, just down the road from my alma mater, Hofstra University. I never got to see a game at the Coliseum, but I did get to see the victory parade in 1982. My interest in hockey kind of faded after that.   Until now. I was offered tickets to see the Islanders play the Arizona Coyotes on Friday, January 21 at their brand-new home, the UBS Arena.  And of course I accepted the tickets. The Islanders’ new home is located across the road from the famed Belmont Racetrack, home of the third jewel in the Triple Crown.  The racetrack and arena are located in Nassau County (a huge improvement from the Isles’ temporary home in Brooklyn), just across the border from the NYC Borough of Queens. Here’s

Saturday 9: I'm the Only One (1993) Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it  here . 1) Melissa Etheridge sings this song as though her heart is breaking. What's your favorite love song? Is it about falling in love, being in love, or losing love? This is a sad song. The singer can 't live with his love but can't leave her either, and convinces himself he's got a reason to stay. 2) "I'm the Only One" is a favorite song of  American Idol  contestants, having been pe

I belong to a Facebook group that focuses on Jewish food.  I posted this photo today, describing my everything bagel with cream cheese, lox and onion as “the real breakfast of champions”. So the group had a lengthy discussion about what to put on a bagel. And a lot of people asked “what does the mug say?” משהו   ( mashu ) is the Hebrew word for "something" and  בעברית  ( b'ivrit ) is Hebrew for "in Hebrew".  Mashu b'ivrit = something in Hebrew. The mug literally says "something in Hebrew". I love a good pun.

I've had to post far too many tributes lately.  We lost another icon last week when Ronnie Specter passed away. Ronnie, her sister and her cousin formed a group they called the Ronettes.  The Ronettes were part of Phil Spector's Wall of Sound; Ronnie and Phil  were married, then divorced. (We won't mention what happened to Phil ... ) She also had a solo career.   Tight skirts, lots of mascara …Ronnie was cool. I saw her perform once, at the old World Trade Center during the 90's.  Radio stations would sponsor free lunchtime concerts on the plaza...CBS-FM would present "oldies" acts, including Ronnie. Here are some of her best songs. Be My Baby    Walking in the Rain    Baby I Love You    I love her cover of this Billy Joel song. He wrote it in her honor, with "Be My Baby" in mind.      Brian Wilson wrote this one for the Ronettes, as a response to "Be My Baby", but wound up recording it with the Beach Boys.  Ronnie later covered it.

That indescribable feeling … not again. A terrorist act targeting Jews.  An act of terror aimed at a synagogue. Four hostages held by a terrorist. Four hostages freed, thank G-d, but the choking feeling remains.

Saturday 9: Bobby's Girl (1962) Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it  here . 1) In this song, Marcie Blane confesses she sits at home, hoping Bobby will call her. Do you owe anyone a phone call or email? Probably. 2) We know Marcie wants to be Bobby's Girl. Let's play the Google Game and find out what you want. Go to your favorite search engine, keystroke your name and "wants," and then search. (For example: "Samantha wants" led us to a math problem that begins: &

And today's theme? Winter theme songs or band names relating to arctic animals, snow/snowmen, hibernation I don't know why this first one is considered a Christmas song, it snows all winter long:    Same with this one, it makes reference to the whole winter season     And this one    This is NOT a Christmas song.  It's a song by the quintessential Ice Queen Now let me tell you how I really feel about winter.    I gotta go where it's warm!

Time for another Saturday 9 Moody Blue Welcome to  Saturday 9 . What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Saturday 9: Moody Blue (1977) Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it  here . 1) This song was recorded in the special studio Elvis had built in the Jungle Room of Graceland. During the pandemic, have you made like Elvis and worked from home?  Absolutely.  I've been to my office twice since March 2020, I've worked from home for almost two years.    2) Elvis sings that his girl is completely unpredictable. Which quality to you find more attractive: spontaneity or dependabi

Weird connections and a crazy ex girlfriend

I have a sad story, a tragic story about a murder.   I first heard about the murder from my friend JoAnne.   JoAnne’s daughter went to high school with my daughter Jen, and the two are still best friends.   What I did not know until recently is that JoAnne’s husband Bob went to high school with Drew.  JoAnne went to the same school as Bob and Drew, but she’s a few years younger than they are, so Drew didn’t know JoAnne when they were students. Anyhow, just after Christmas JoAnne posted about a murder that took place in the town where she and Bob and Drew grew up. An 85 year old woman had been killed by her son’s crazy ex girlfriend.  The guy is in his 40’s, divorced, and was living with his mother.  He had a fight with the ex girlfriend, and when he came home … The ex girlfriend stabbed and killed the older woman, and stabbed the guy multiple times, putting him in the hospital.  JoAnne posted a link to the family’s GoFundMe.  It was sad, it was tragic.   I’m not from that town, and I r

Temper tantrum

I am about to forget that I am an adult, I am ready to stamp my feet and shout “it’s not fair!” Back in 2019, in those halcyon, pre-pandemic days, Billy Joel announced that he’d play a concert on February 20, 2020 as part of his monthly residency at Madison Square Garden.  Well, you know how I feel about Billy Joel.  I’ve seen him in concert twice, he does a great show.  So a concert just two days after my birthday would have been perfect. But … Drew thought he needed surgery. Schools around here close for an entire week after Presidents’ Day, and if he was able to schedule his surgery for the week that school was closed, he wouldn’t need to miss work. I am an adult.      I understand priorities. By the time we found out that Drew (thankfully) did not need surgery after all, it was too late to get tickets for the February 20 show unless we wanted to spend a fortune on StubHub. No worries, right?  It’s a monthly residency.  New shows get scheduled all the time, you can always get good s
