Music Monday —Allan Sherman
So what can you say about Allan Sherman? A nice Jewish boy, a TV comedy writer/producer who hit it big in the 1960's with his very ethnic parody songs.
You've probably heard a few of his songs. Even if you haven't, you should listen...you'll laugh.
Let's start with "Harvey and Sheila".
"My Zelda"
In his autobiography Sherman mentions that even JFK was singing this one:
And we close it out with his best-known work:

HA! Hello Muddah! I remember that, smiles. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Enjoy
DeleteLove Camp Granada. Have been singing it all my life. Happy Monday!
ReplyDeleteRobin,
ReplyDeleteI believe it was you who introduced me to Allen Sherman. Of course, I recognized him immediately when you shared once before "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh". Up until then I had no idea that he was Jewish or even a comedian singer. His humorous tunes always bring a smile to my face. Excellent way to close out February on the dance floor! Thanks for being apart of the crew this month, my dear honorary co-hostess! Have a boogietastic week. ;)
My pleasure
DeleteUntil The Beatles came around, Allan Sherman was my favorite musical artist. My favorite album of his is "Allan In Wonderland," with "Green Stamps," "The Drop-Outs March," and "Holiday for States." Poor guy died broke and pretty much alone. What a shame...
ReplyDeleteYes, his life story ...the real deal, not the romanticized version in his autobiography...was sad.
DeleteI loved Allan Sherman. Another memorable line, from what song I don't know--but it's about the "drapes of Roth" which allegedly hung in the White House.
ReplyDeleteIt’s his parody of Battle Hymn of the Republic. He called it The Ballad of Harry Lewis.
DeleteOh yes, how I remember Allan Sherman. My friend had the My Son the Folk Singer album and...well, it is nice hearing these once again. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

ReplyDeleteSo much fun! I've heard the Camp Granada song in commercials and such, so it was nice to get to 'know' the man behind the music (with bonus songs, too!) :) Thanks for the dance!
