9...er, 6 glorious innings...

So...Thursday August 22, the annual pilgrimage to Citi Field.

Drew bought the tickets through a charity website -- someone donated the tickets, and Drew was the highest bidder.  He paid less than face value for the tickets.  A lot less.

But that was when the Mets were on a terrible losing streak and it looked like their season was over before it had begun.

But now the Mets are on an amazing winning streak, reminiscent of 1969, and they are real contenders for the wild card spot in the National League  playoffs.

And the team that was in town?  The Cleveland Indians, who have a real shot at the American League playoffs.

Sounds like we got a real bargain.

So after work I took the subway (the infamous #7) to Flushing and Drew drove in from Long Island.  He got to the ball park first, and sent me a text message:  our seats were Hyundai Club level.

For those with Hyundai Club tickets, enjoy the all-inclusive food and non-alcoholic beverage experience in the Hyundai Club. In addition to the option of a traditional entrĂ©e with all the accompaniments, try the hot dog, slider and nacho stations, as well as a daily chef's selection. Load up on peanuts, popcorn, cookies, ice cream and more. Fountain beverages and bottled water included. Full bar available.

Oh, wow....

The view from our seats:

Yeah, that good.

Let's take a moment to honor the retired Mets' numbers:

And of course there's the home run apple:

No planes overhead tonight.  But I could see all the planes landing at La Guardia  -- they'd appear near the Coca Cola sign, then flying behind the scoreboard. I'd catch a glimpse of each plane between the scoreboard and the Jumbo-tron, then see the plan again after it passed by the Jumbo-tron:

Cool, huh?

But I didn't come to Citi Field to watch planes.  I came to watch BASEBALL.

Three-game series, the Mets won Tuesday night and Wednesday night and were looking for a sweep....

And Noah Syndergaard was n the mound for the Mets:

We love our Thor -- you have to love a guy whose walk-up music is Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song"...

In the bottom of the 4th Wilson Ramos hit a 2-run double that gave the Mets a 2-0 lead...

And Thor was perfect through 5 1/3 innings....in the 6th inning he gave up a single to Tyler Naquin...

And then, bottom of the 6th....everyone was told to go inside, that "severe weather" is coming....

We headed back to the Hyndai Club to wait out the rain delay.  Who could argue with free ice cream, after all?

But as the rain delay dragged on...and on...and on...most people decided to call it a night.  Eventually we decided to go home; if it had been a Friday or Saturday night, we probably would have stayed to the very end, but I had to go to work the next day.

So we drove home in the pouring rain.  Got back to Drew's house and turned on the TV  -- after a 2 1/2 hour rain delay, play had resumed at Citi Field.  They played for another 34 minutes, and then the rain started again.  The game was called 36 minutes into the second rain delay. It was an anticlimactic way to win a game and a series.  I'm kind of glad we didn't stay.

By the way, the Coca Cola sign?

It comes alive between innings:

  2. And then there was last night, where they tacked on the three innings you missed (and two more) and lost 2-1 to the Braves....

  3. Yes, Linda, it was fun.

And John...it’s hard to be a Mets fan sometimes.

  4. I just realized I read this and never commented. I had to tell hubbie (who is a big Mets fan) about this auction. I enjoyed your pictures of Citi Field, which we have passed on the highway but never been in and I got a kick out of the Coca-Cola sign between innings. I've never been in anything luxurious; in fact I went to Met games with a friend back in "too many years ago" when they had ladies day promotions and you literally sat about sic rows from the top of Shea Stadium. We called them the "nosebleed seats", and you watched the tiny ant-like players playing, all for 50 cents. It was such a thrill, and all we could afford! Too bad you were rained out like that. That was one epic rainout. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
