GRE

Three simple letters adding up to one very big test! Jen will be graduating from college in May, and her plan is to start a Master’s in Education in the fall of 2012. The programs she’s most interested in “strongly suggest” that a candidate take the GRE and include the test results as part of the application for admission. Well, since Jen has time available now (not having found employment this summer), she decided that she will schedule the test for the last week in August, just before she returns to school. (I love that she can schedule the test at a testing center anytime she’s ready. So different from taking the SAT exam, which you take at the convenience of the College Board.) She bought the GRE review book two days ago. She’s serious about the test. (And she’s getting study prep for the exam from a family friend. Jenn is a high school English teacher who also teaches SAT test prep. Yes, Jen (with one “n”) and Jenn (with two “n’s”) will be working together. “Single ‘...

graduation time

(cross posted at Midcentury Modern Moms ) On Sunday Becca will graduate from high school.  There will be a ceremony at the high school, she and her classmates will wear cap and gown, and we will listen to speeches and musical performances.  I will be in tears, my baby girl will be a high school graduate.  I am already in tears over the family drama going on.  Let's just say no one is happy, no one wants to compromise and I am in the middle with everyone mad at me. But on Sunday my baby will graduate.  On Sunday I will put on a smile and be oh-so-proud of my little girl. She'll be headed off to college soon. They say you should give your child roots and wings. I hope I've done both.  Can't wait for her to stretch those wings and see where she flies.

deja vu

because my girls are so close in age, I barely have time to recover from participating in the rights of passage for my older daughter, when I find myself doing the same with the younger daughter. I feel like we just went to Jen's graduation, it's hard to believe she will finish her first year of college in just a few weeks. Becca is a junior this year, which means she's been taking college entrance exams and visiting college campuses. in a few weeks she will sit for her formal senior portrait, and shortly after that we will receive the "proofs" -- and I will see my baby in cap and gown. and then she will go to the junior outing,a semi formal held in lieu of a junior prom (which does not involve all those after=prom issues!) and today she informed me that one of her friends, a boy who goes to the other high school in our district, has invited her to senior prom.

school calendar = tears

I visited the school district's website today. and there it was. the 2009-2010 school calendar. the first day of school. each vacation day. the last day of classes. graduation. Becca's senior year, laid out on a neat sheet of paper. the last year my life will be governed by a public school calendar. when the girls were little I figured out "Jen will graduate from high school in 2008 and Becca in 2010." 2010. wasn't that an Arthur C. Clarke novel? it seemed so far away. and now it's almost here. and I'm not ready to let her go.
