Wednesday Hodgepodge

Once again, Joyce asks the questions.

1. It's that time of year again...time for Lake Superior University to present a list of words (or phrases) they'd like to see banished (for over-use, mis-use, or genera uselessness) in 2018. You can read more about the decision making process and word meaning here, but this year's top vote getters are-

unpack, dish (as in dish out the latest rumor), pre-owned, onboarding/offboarding, nothingburger, let that sink in, let me ask you this, impactful, Cofefe, drill down, fake news, hot water heater (hot water doesn't need to be heated), and gig economy

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Is there a word not on the list you'd like to add?

The only word on that list that I would banish?  Cofefe, and only because I want to banish the originator of the word.  If he's not relevant, the word won't be used anymore.

2. What's something you need to get rid of in the new year?

A bad attittude.

3. Where do you feel stuck?

Weight loss efforts.  I'm starting the program again.  Yes, again.

4. January is National Soup Month. When did you last have a bowl of soup? Was it made from scratch or from a can? Your favorite canned soup? Your favorite soup to make from scratch on a cold winter's day?

Yesterday I had chicken noodle soup from the kosher deli.  I had a coupon for a free pint.  the coupon was given to me when I donated blood.  A pint for a pint.

5. Tell us one thing you're looking forward to in 2018.

We're having a big birthday bash to celebrate Drew's milestone birthday next month.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Not loving the Artic freeze.  This is going to be a looong winter, isn't it?

  2. This frigid cold has everyone down, I think. I'm afraid it will be a long winter, but on the plus side, the days are already getting longer! :-)

  3. I have to disagree with you on covfefe. It was the middle of the night. I woke up and checked Twitter on my phone. (I do this sometimes to lull me back to sleep.) And I saw reference to the word. And another. I tracked back to its origin. And I laughed.

I spent a good 20 minutes in the middle of the night in laughter when I badly needed a laugh. The Twitter posts riffing on it were brilliant. Creative. And so, so funny.

Of course, that was a moment in time. I guess that moment has passed.

  4. Yes, the moment has passed, and it’s time for that word ...and himself ....to go.
