American Museum of Natural History

Image
We live on Long Island, just a short commute into New York City and all the cultural riches it offers. The  American Museum of Natural History  is one of the most famous museums in the world. And not just because of the movie  Night at the Museum . And we visited the museum last week. When you visit the museum you will get lessons on astronomy, anthropology, archeology, zoology, paleontology, biology, ecology … and because all of the halls and some of the exhibits bear the names of donors, you’ll learn about philanthropy as well. And if you doubt the veracity of Darwin’s theory of evolution…the museum will either turn you into a believer or make your head explode. This is a meteor. It crashed into Earth thousands of years ago.    Paleontology time.    These guys look scary. Pacific Islands And this guy looks familiar I learned a lot about the Native Americans who lived on the plains and the eastern woodlands.    The animal displays alwa...

Saturday 9

Image
Old Me Welcome to  Saturday: 9 . What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9  questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to  answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions! Saturday 9: The Old Me (2020) Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it  here .   We're bidding adieu to the old year with a song  about looking back.  Thanks for participating in Saturday 9 during 2023.  1) In this song, the lead singer thanks his younger self for everything he learned from past experience. What's something you learned in 2023? We are all constantly learning.  Big things, small things. One thing I learned was how to get two cats who don’t like ea...

Feline Friday

Scenes from the living room They look so peaceful in these photos. The other day I was sitting in the living room.  Duchess ran into the room, Shadow was chasing her.  They both jumped up onto the couch, then jumped down and ran out again.  A few minutes later Duchess was chasing Shadow… Drew witnessed a similar chase scene, one that resulted in significant hissing and growling,  “If Duchess could have launched a bomb at Shadow, she would have.” Funny how they never do that when I’ve got my camera in my hand …

Another this and that

OK, so who shredded my reusable grocery bag from Target?  I’m looking at you, Moon Shadow … and yes, I did lock up the cat treats, there will be no more helping yourself … I definitely got more than I bargained for when I asked for a cat with personality. Someone needs to remind me to stay out of the supermarket on December 24.  But we were out of so many things, and we must not  run out of Fancy Feast.  I went shopping at 9:30 in the morning, and the place was already starting to resemble a zoo. Tradition has been honored, we went out for Chinese food last night.  Christmas is over, it’s time to look towards New Year’s Eve.  A group of us are going to a Greek place — buffet dinner, live entertainment, champagne toast at midnight.  Should be fun.   Meanwhile, this week should be fairly quiet at work.  I’ll be able to catch up on things.  Things will heat up in January.

Jones Beach Holiday Lights

Image
Time for our annual tour of the lights at Jones Beach.  It’s a drive-through display.  You tune your car radio to the local FM frequency, where the park provided appropriate holiday music. At the end of the drive there’s a small Christmas village, where you can get snacks, make s’mores, and visit Santa.   You have no idea how happy I was to discover that there are gluten free cookies at the snack bar. Some highlights. You know how I feel about dragons. From the fairy tale section, Rapunzel. Three French hens   Dinosaurs? Barbie’s Dream House At the village Another fun evening.

Saturday 9

Happy Holidays! Welcome to  Saturday: 9 . We love memes, however, and here is today's meme! SATURDAY 9: HAPPY HOLIDAYS  From the archives 1. As you can see, when Sam Winters was a little girl, she loved giving her annual wish list to Santa. If you could ask Santa for anything at all, right now, what would it be? That’s between me and Santa! 2. Are you currently on the Naughty or Nice list? How did you get there? I am always nice.  Of course I am.  Right?  Right?   3. Are you traveling this Christmas? If so, are you going by car, plane or train? No, we aren’t going anywhere 4. Did you ...
