Bad Education on HBO

Bad Education

Anybody else catch the movie last night?  Very gripping drama.

I thought Hugh Jackman was terrific!  He played Frank Tessone, a school administrator ...

The movie is based on a real-life incident, a scandal that rocked Long Island  in 2004.  I remember the scandal, the local papers published all the gory details.

What you have to understand .... there are numerous school districts on Long Island where the parents  have money and want their kids to go to Ivy League schools.   Very pushy parents who get upset if their 3rd grader isn’t accepted into the gifted program, who want their high school kids in AP and honors classes. Who compare their schools to other, similar districts and complain if another district is perceived as “better”.

Trust me on this, I grew up in one of “those” districts, and raised my children in that district.

Such districts include Great Neck, Syosset, Jericho, Manhasset, Half Hollow Hills, and Roslyn.

The Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Schools in the Roslyn School District embezzled millions of dollars.

Frank Tassone was hired as Superintendent to improve Roslyn’s test scores, etc., and to get more of its graduates into top tier colleges.  He did his job well, but also stole millions of dollars to fuel an extravagant lifestyle.  Pamela Gluckin was the Assistant Superintendent in charge of the district’s business affairs.  Her entire family was involved in the embezzlement.

The movie was filmed on Long Island, partially in Roslyn and partially in Levittown.  I recognized some of the locations.

Several scenes at the end of the movie take place in the courthouse.  If those scenes were not filmed on location, well, someone took the time to recreate a courtroom and hallway from the courthouse in Mineola.

I enjoyed the movie.  But even if you’re not from Long Island, if you like crime dramas, you’ll like this movie.

  1. I don't get HBO, but I did hear about this movie. Interesting. I know of the parents you speak, but they are a smaller percentage in the district I work for.

    1. Im sure you know the type. Certain districts have an over abundance of that type of parent.

  2. No HBO. We gave it up a couple of years ago. Miss two programs - John Oliver (both husband and I) and Bill Maher (just hubbie)and that's about it. When we would travel and have access to HBO in the motel, seems that we never found anything we liked, so not thinking of getting it now. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
