Saturday 9

But Beautiful

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: But Beautiful (1947)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) The lyrics encourage us to take a chance on love. What's something you've done recently that took you outside your comfort zone? How did it turn out?

What you have to understand about me is that I’ve had a weight problem since my teens, I was about 40 pounds overweight by the time I went to college.  But I gained an enormous amount of weight when I was pregnant with my older daughter (she’s 34) and gained even more when I was pregnant with my younger daughter (she’s 32), and struggled with my weight for decades after that.  Two years ago my doctor prescribed Wegovy.  I’ve lost 116 pounds. I’m still not at my goal weight, but I weigh less now than I did before I got pregnant.

Of course, this dramatic weight loss means I have to change my perceptions about myself. And one big change is the clothing I can wear.

When my boyfriend and I went out to dinner last week, I wore an outfit I couldn’t have imagined wearing two years ago.  I wore leggings, a tunic and boots.  And I felt good …

2) Bing Crosby introduced "But Beautiful" in the 1947 film, Road to Rio. Name another movie song that became a hit.

It’s from one of my favorite movies.

3) Bing's leading lady in Road to Rio was Dorothy Lamour. When she was a teenager, she worked as an elevator operator. With the advent of user-operated/push-button elevators, few elevator operator jobs remain. What's another job that was once commonplace, but has virtually disappeared?

Messenger services.  If you needed to get a letter or package across town same day, instead of mailing it you hired a messenger to deliver it.  The practice of law being very paper-intensive, we actually had our own messengers on staff.

Then came FedEx, fax machines and email …

4) Road to Rio was one of seven Road movies Bing Crosby and Bob Hope made together. They were one the most financially successful comedy teams in history. What movie or TV show always makes you laugh?

5) Crosby's given name was Harry but he acquired the nickname "Bing" because as a kid he was a fan of a comic strip character named "Bingo." As a child, did you read the newspaper?

Of course.  Back then Newsday was an afternoon paper.  I’d want to read it as soon as it was delivered.  And sometimes my mother would actually let me read it  before she read it.

Now I read the newspaper on my iPad.

6) His 1942 version of "White Christmas" is still one of the best-selling records of all time. He was a movie star, nominated three times for the Oscar, winning once. Can you name another performer who has been successful both acting and singing?

Barbra Streisand

7) Bing loved golf and enjoyed traveling the world, playing at different courses. If today you were to receive an airline ticket to any city in the world, what destination would you choose? What would you be certain to see/do there?

Oh my, there are so many places I’d want to go! Hard to pick just one ..,

Next stop, Tel Aviv. We’re not staying long, just long enough to see the Port of Jaffa and a couple of museums before we head to Jerusalem.  We have a friend who lives in Jerusalem, she hasn’t been back to the States in years, so of course we will visit her. We also have to see the Old City, the Western Wall, Yad Vashem … and a day trip to the Dead Sea and Masada.   If there’s time, maybe a tour of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher.

8) In 1947, when "But Beautiful" was a hit, Farrah Fawcett was born. She became famous for her bathing suit poster, her blonde hair, and a 70s TV show. Without looking it up, do you know the name of that television series?

I watched  Charlie’s Angels all the time.

9) Random question -- Are you someone who makes things happen, or someone things happen to?

A bit of both, I think

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

  1. I don't remember what it was I saw it in now, but I was shocked to learn Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar on Star Trek: TNG) was a relation. I mean, the last name and all. But it just never occurred to me.
