movie review: Tron Legacy

The movie opens today, but Drew and I got to see it a few days ago at a special preview.

I've never seen the original Tron, Disney's 1982  homage to video games and gamers.  Drew has it on videotape and tells me he'll show it to me -- we were supposed to watch it before seeing Legacy, but ....

Well, anyhow, you don't need to have seen the original movie in order to follow the plot of the sequel.  the orginal protagonist, Kevin Flyyn, has disappeared, leaving behind a 12 year old son, Sam.  Years later, Sam goes to the video arcade his father used to run -- closed down now and preserved in all its 1980's glory -- and somehow finds his way into the digital world his father invented.  He finds himself engaged in combat with "programs" as he seeks out his father and does battle with his father's alter-ego, CLU.

It's a 3D movie, but interestingly, the "real world" sequences are shot in 2D and the 3D effects occur only when Sam is in the digital world.

I enjoyed this movie a lot, and now I want to go back and watch the original.

We also got to see the trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean 4 ...can't wait for this movie to come out next May!

  1. We're total geeks here-bought the movie the first time it came out on DVD, then the 20th anniversary edition, a laser disc and the Tron 2.0 computer game that was supposed to be the model for the sequel.

Oh, and some of the kodaliths from the film.

Can't wait to see it, and I'm glad to hear that it was enjoyable to someone who hasn't seen the first movie!

  2. Drew is annoyed with himself. he's got the original movie on VHS but somehow lost his DVD of the movie. He found it on Amazon for $120, not worth it to him, not when it's going to be rereleased in the spring.

  3. I've been toying with selling the original one on Ebay, they've been anywhere from $35 to $100 on there lately.

The boys have been wearing Flynn's Arcade shirts we got at Suncoast (at Sunrise Mall, believe it or not) and nagging me regularly to see this one.
