Levittown

So we live in Levittown, the quintessential suburb, the prototype for the modern suburban community,

As I’ve mentioned before, Bill Levitt and his company, Levitt & Sons, built this humongous community known as Levittown, and which extended into Hicksville and Wantagh.  The impetus for development was the housing shortage which occurred as former GI’s returned from WW II, married and started the Baby Boom.

Each neighborhood built by Levitt had winding streets with bucolic names, and included parks, shopping centers and public pools.

There were two model houses — the cape, which had 750 square feet of living space (kitchen, living room, two bedrooms and a bath) and the slightly larger ranch — same number of rooms but with a whopping 800 square feet of living space.  Both models had a loft for future expansion.  Some later models included a carport or a garage.

Over the years, of course, people remodeled their homes.  Some added garages, others converted garages to additional living space.  Lofts became bedrooms.  Living rooms were extended to accommodate dining areas.  And so on. I don’t think there’s an original, unaltered Levitt house on Long Island.

The house Drew lived in for 28 years was an original 1948 Levitt ranch.  My apartment in Wantagh was the loft of a 1952 Levitt ranch.  The house in Hicksville was a Levitt ranch.  And now we are back in Levittown, in a 1950 Levitt ranch.  It’s been expanded, of course.  It’s bigger than the house we had in Hicksville.  But the original bones of the house are still here …and so the house feels both familiar and brand new.

The more things change …

  1. It's interesting how families managed to live in smaller houses than now and everything worked out. The houses on my block are all small, built in the early 1960s. I think three different models. It's three bedrooms, and open kitchen/dining/living area, so it doesn't feel small, but it's just 960 square feet. Bigger than the original Levitts, but when I mention it to people they wonder how I can do it! I miss a garage, if only for storage. And I'd rather my washer and dryer weren't in the bathroom.

  3. So, if you were to go into any house in the neighborhood, you'd know where the bathroom was without being told? There's something nice about a familiar floor plan all in the neighborhood.
