Saturday 9 - Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast

Daddy, Don't You Walk So Fast

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast (1972)
... Because it's Father's Day weekend.
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song is about a little girl who runs after her daddy. When is the last time you ran? Were you trying to get somewhere in a hurry, or playing a sport?

It's been awhile.  I was probably trying to catch a train.

2) This song was a top ten hit for Wayne Newton. Mr. Newton is better known for his TV work, having made more than 150 appearances since 1963. Have you ever been on TV? Or in a YouTube video?

Yes, I was on the local cable news.  It was back in the early 80's, when cable was still new and not everyone had access.  A reporter interviewed me for a segment she was doing on gypsy moth caterpillars -- they were out of control that summer.

3) The road leading to Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport is named Wayne Newton Blvd. in his honor. When is the last time you were at an airport? Were you flying somewhere, picking someone up, or dropping them off?

4) Wayne says Elvis Presley haunts Las Vegas, and believes that The King of Rock and Roll has given him performing and parenting tips from beyond the grave. When did you last see Elvis? On TV, on a t-shirt, poster or magazine cover, or as a ghostly apparition?

Probably on TV.

5) When Sam walks with her own dad, the problem isn't that he walks fast. It's that he's always stopping to pick up litter he finds on the grass. Litterbugs are his pet peeve. What's your pet peeve?

Drivers who play their music so loud it can be heard outside of their car.  Ever get stuck at a red light next to one off these losers?

6) Sam's own father often traveled for business, and always gave her the complimentary soaps, shampoos or body lotion he got from the hotel. When she went away to college, she used her collection of little bottles and was grateful for all the money they saved her. What's something you've done recently to economize?

There's a five cent deposit on soda cans and bottles here in NY.  I've been making the effort to return the cans and bottles to the recycle center.

7) It was her father who taught Sam to drive. Are you a better student or teacher?

People at my office must  think I'm a decent teacher, they ask me to train newbies on our software.

8) Sam's father also always asks if her car in "tip top" condition. Most recently he reminded her to test her headlights, tail lights and turn signals while the car is parked to make sure they're all working. Do you have a car maintenance tip to share?

Find a good mechanic.

9) Sam's father satisfies his afternoon sugar craving with an almost endless stream of Butter Rum Lifesavers. Do you usually enjoy a between meal snack?

Seriously?  I don't think I've ever met a snack I didn't like.

  1. "Trying to catch a train." Yes, the story of my (pre-Covid) life!

I think it's interesting that you skipped the airport question, what with your background.

Is it 5¢/can even for the new, smaller 7.5 oz. can, too?

    1. Avoidance. I was at the airport in March 2019, coming home from vacation. Sigh. But the word “airport” kind of triggered me ...My daughter Becca flew home from Europe in March of this year, right after the travel ban was announced, it was a nightmare.

  3. We've got the 5¢ deposit on cans/bottles here in Maine so it's weird when I go to another state that doesn't save returnables.

  4. All of our recycling centers have been closed. I don't know if they've reopened or not. Most of the municipalities used to have the big bins you could just drop stuff in but it wasn't proving cost effective and they've done away with them.

  5. My father does walk pretty fast. He's been known to get several steps in front of me and not notice. It drives his wife up a wall, but I know he doesn't mean it maliciously. He just walks fast. (He's 74. I really need to up my game :)

  6. I'm with you on the loud music when you're stuck next to them … especially a long red light. I try not to look at them.

  7. There used to be deposits on things here, but that has been gone a long, long time. Now we just have recycling bins. I keep laundry baskets in the kitchen and toss the paper, plastic, and cans in those.
