Egg cream day is back!
One of my favorite businesses is Bobb Howard’s General Store. It’s a real mom and pop shop, a small candy store attached to an automotive repair business. They sell retro candy and toys.
I’ve written about this place many times, most recently here and here. Regal Crown sour cherry, Charms sour balls, Chunky, Reggie Bars, Bonomo Turkish Taffy …
Well, in the pre-Covid world, they had a wonderful promotion. Every year, on the Saturday before Valentine’s Day, they’d sponsor ‘free egg cream day’.
An egg cream is a drink. It contains neither eggs nor cream. Its components are chocolate syrup (preferably Fox’s U-bet or Bosco), milk, seltzer and nostalgia. There was a time where this beverage was served in every deli and luncheonette and candy store in NYC and environs, but these days it’s hard to find anyone who sells the drink.
So once a year they’d invite all their patrons to drop by the store, and they’d hand out paper cups full of sweet, creamy, chocolaty goodness. Of course, we’d spend a small fortune on candy …
And we’d be sure to pick up our birthday gift. You get a postcard from the store for your birthday, which you redeem for a small toy — one year they gave me a yo-yo, another year it was a Jacob’s Ladder … since Drew and I each celebrate our birthdays in February, we’d get our birthday gifts on egg cream day,
But then … Covid.
It’s a tiny store, it gets very crowded on egg cream day, the owners didn’t feel comfortable…
We still went to the store, of course, got our toys and spent a fortune on candy. But no egg creams.
Sigh …
Today I got an email. EGG CREAM DAY IS BACK!
You know where I will be in February 8.
Have one for me, too. Never had one, but I like the man's spirit...
ReplyDeleteYeah, the owners are a really interesting couple. They care about their customers and they love running the candy store. But I’m not surprised you never had an egg cream, it’s a very New York thing,
