Wine country redux

So remember we went to the North Fork wine country?

We had such a good time that we simply had to go back.  The weather cooperated, we had a cool, overcast but dry day to enjoy the outdoors.

This time, we started our day at Duck Walk Vineyards.  This is a casual spot, you get wine at the bar and bring it out to the garden to enjoy.  They also have a small selection of cheeses and some crackers.  I was so impressed with the white dessert port that I simply had to buy a bottle.

Next up, Croteaux Vineyards.  A lovely tasting garden with waiter service. All of the wines here are rose, some sparkling, some not.  We ordered a selection of wines and some spiced nuts, cheese and a baguette.

Lunch at Modern Snack Bar is becoming a habit.  This time I had a hamburger.

Drew mentioned (several times) that he was interested in buying duck eggs. So we headed over to Browder’s Birds, a working poultry farm a bit off the beaten track.  They have a small farm stand, but alas, no duck eggs.  We did see a few ducks, though; they walked across the driveway as we were leaving the farm.

Twin Stills Moonshine was open, so we stopped in for a whiskey tasting.  You can get a small flight of whiskies and vodkas, sample the various flavored liquors.

We stopped at South Shore Market and Farms.

We loaded upon fresh local produce, then headed over to The Riverhead Ciderhouse.  This is another casual spot.  You can order ciders and local beers at the bar, grab some food at the cafe, then find a table and enjoy.  There are board games available if you care to play.  There’s a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs as well as cider, beer and local wines.  I just loved this t shirt.

So true.

I had a Brie and fig grilled cheese sandwich, Drew had pizza, our friends also ordered grilled cheese, and we tasted a variety of ciders.  Our conclusion?  Plain apple cider is the best, avoid black cherry, watermelon mint and the like.?

All in all, another great day.  I think we’ll be doing this again next summer.

  1. I checked out some of the recipes on the Browder's Birds site - interesting. I can get duck eggs locally. They aren't cheap but they are worth it for certain things. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  2. Duck eyes I like to cook with. I don't care for them fried.
