The healing power of sports

We weren’t home last night, so we recorded it on the DVR and watched in this morning.

What did we watch?  The Mets/Yankees game at Citi Field.

The commemoration of 9/11.

The Mets in the uniforms they wore in 2001, the words “New York” across their chests, an American flag on the back of their jerseys.  The visiting Yankees in their road uniforms, the uniforms that haven’t changed in decades, but also bearing the image of our flags.  Both teams wearing the caps of NYC’s first responders —  NYPD, Port Authority, FDNY…even the court officers and sanitation workers represented on the field.  The players from both teams embracing.  Bobby Valentine and Joe Torre throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

There was much talk of Mike Piazza’s famous home run, of President Bush throwing out the first pitch at Yankee Stadium during the World Series, how Derek Jeter told him not to bounce it.

They played an interesting game … but unfortunately the Yankees won.

Still, it was a wonderful night,  full of memories.
