Road trip day 3 part 2

So we left the harbor area to investigate a different type of history.

Baseball history,

More specifically, the shrine dedicated to the greatest baseball player in the history of the game.

Babe Ruth was born in Baltimore, and played very briefly in the Orioles minor league system, before beginning his major league career with the Boston Red Sox and ultimately the New York Yankees.

I learned something interesting today.

Why is “The Star Spangled Banner” sung at baseball games?

It all goes back to the 1918 World Series, played at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The National League Chicago Cubs vs. the American League Boston Red Sox.  The Cubs borrowed the stadium from the White Sox because of its larger capacity.   It was during WW I, and many servicemen were in the audience.

“The Star Spangled Banner” would not become our national anthem until 1931, but it was a popular and patriotic song, perfect music for the 7th inning stretch of Game 1.  By Game 3 the idea was so popular that the song was played before the game started,

Here’s my favorite version.

I must say, my patriotism took a hit for four long years, but today … today I felt proud of our history, of our ideals, of where this country has been and what it can become,

We spent about an hour or so, then headed to our next destination, Jimmy’s Famous Seafood.

This restaurant has appeared on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-ins and Dives multiple times, so we just had to try it.  The meal was costly—seems there’s a crabmeat shortage right now — but well worth the effort.

We had crabmeat egg roll appetizers (an item that appeared in the show) — large egg roll wrappers stuffed with crabmeat and served with two spicy sweet sauces.  We had crab cakes with Jimmy’s special remoulade — 8 ounces of crab cake, most of it crabmeat with very little filler.  I had garlic mashed potatoes and Drew had macaroni and cheese.  The dinner rolls were hot out of the oven.  Large portions = leftovers to bring back to the motel.  Totally amazing experience.

And our waitress gave us the name of a place to eat when we go to Annapolis.
