Wednesday Medley

1. Sadie Hawkins' Day. Also known as Turn-About Day. On this date in Dogpatch, Judge Hawkins declared a race between the town's eligible bachelors and the spinsters (including his daughter, Sadie) with the prize being matrimony. Nowadays celebrated as a day on which the girl asks the boy to the big sock hop.

For those of us who are single: Any special plans? Is a restraining order and a monitoring anklet hampering you from finding true love?

For those of us who are in a relationship: Do you have any words of encouragement for the single ladies? Advice on removing a monitoring anklet?

Oh my goodness, you brought back a memory.  I went to day camp when I was a child, and for some show or event I remember dressing as Daisy Mae from Dogpatch.

As for relationship advice...I am in a very weird relationship, it works for us, but I am not about to give out relationship advice.
2. Today is Indian Pudding Day. Colonists to America substituted cornmeal which they called "Indian flour" in their recipes for hasty pudding. Indian pudding fell out of favor in the late nineteenth century with its long cooking time.

Are you a crock pot, electric / gas range, microwave cook? Or do you go to restaurants or order take-out / delivery?

Bonus question: Vanilla ice cream is listed as an optional topping. Is it really optional?

Never had Indian pudding, or hasty pudding for that matter.

I am definitely among the restaurant/take out type.

3. National Education Support Professionals Day recognizes the unsung school heroines: Bus drivers, cafeteria ladies, secretaries, crossing guards, custodial workers...

Anyone special to whom you want to give a shout out?

My daughters fondly remember the head of the school cafeteria at their elementary school.  Mrs. I knew every child's name.  Mrs. I had been at the school when my younger sisters were students there, so she kind of looked on my daughters as "grandchildren" of a sort.  When I registered Jen for kindergarten, Mrs. I welcomed her to the school with an ice cream sandwich.

4. Dear Santa Letter Week. Remember writing to Santa Claus for a doll or a book or credits to Google Play to download MP3 songs and apps to your smartphone?

Now we are adults and understand the true meaning of Christmas. What did you wish for when you were little? Did you sit on Santa's lap at the department store for a photograph? What do the little ones in your life ask Santa to bring?

I'm Jewish.  I got plenty of presents for Chanukah every year, but Santa wasn't part of our tradition.

We did not encourage my daughters to believe in Santa, though we did take them to say hello to the old gent at Macy's flagship store in Herald Square -- they do an incredible display for Santaland, and we did appreciate the decorations.

Neither of my daughters has children yet, so...
5. Happy 20th Birthday, Lando Norris! Lando is a Formula 1 race car driver.

Who took you out on the road when you were learning to drive? Did your road test with the examiner go smoothly? What was your first destination driving solo?

Bonus question: Ever dream of driving a race car? Or a Ford Mustang Shelby GT500® with the Predator 5.2L 32 valve V-8 DOHC engine capable of producing 760 hp and 625 ft / lb of torque?

I took Driver's Ed in high school.  And I took a few lessons with a private driving school.  And my mom took me out on the road.

And o, I do not harbor a secret desire to drive a race car.

6. Please share with us something interesting about your week.

Drew had an interesting visitor to his yard this weekend.

  1. I'm wondering if Indian Pudding is what the older folks around here call "mush." It's hard enough to slice and it's actually pretty good fried and doctored with butter and syrup.

Santaland at Herald Square...I bet that is something amazing to see!

Cute little feathered friend. I was visiting with one of the nursing home residents the other day and a big red-headed woodpecker landed in the tree outside her window. We watched him until he flew away.

    Happy Wednesday!

  2. Wait, what, your in a strange relationship? (lolololol--please excuse me being silly, I just walked a 1 /2 mile from the car to the History building and my brain is still frozen, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA) grin.

Have a great day and p.s. I do harbor a secret desire to drive a fast car--not a race car but a Bughatti. sp?).

  3. Yes, a very strange relationship. I was 19 and Drew was 21 when we met. We dated, broke up, dated, broke up, dated, got engaged, got married, got divorced, reconciled and are currently dating. It's not what I'd recommend for anyone else, but it works for us, most of the time.

  4. My high school did the Sadie Hawkins dance in the spring (March, if memory serves). But they don't really do them any more.

My father taught me to drive stick shift in the parking lot of the local baseball stadium (on an off day, so it was empty). That's a fun memory.

  5. What, Daisy Mae and not Stupefyin' Jones?

  6. Nice little feathered visitor. If the relationship works for you that's all that matters.
