Saturday 9
Georgia on My Mind
Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: Georgia on My Mind (1978)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
4) While it's at odds with his "outlaw" image, Willie was a popular and active high school student. He played three sports and was a member of Future Farmers of America. What school activities did you participate in during your teen years?
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) This lyrics refer to "an old sweet song." What old sweet song is a favorite of yours?
What popped into my head …
2) Composer Hoagy Carmichael said he was inspired by saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer to write a song about Georgia. In those days, bands traveled by bus and Frankie enjoyed rolling through Georgia. Hoagy recalled that Frankie even volunteered the first two words, "Georgia, Georgia ..." If we were to organize a Saturday 9 bus trip, where would you recommend we go for lovely scenery?
East End of Long Island. Quaint towns, farms and vineyards, ocean beaches.
3) This version of "Georgia on My Mind" was controversial before it was even recorded. Willie Nelson's label, Columbia, didn't see the point of their outlaw country star singing an old standard that was associated with Ray Charles and Ella Fitzgerald. Willie had the last laugh. This record was a hit and Willie won a Grammy. Tell us about a time when you were a success despite opposition.
Every time I walk into court and come out with a victory for my client …
4) While it's at odds with his "outlaw" image, Willie was a popular and active high school student. He played three sports and was a member of Future Farmers of America. What school activities did you participate in during your teen years?
Drama club, Spanish club, school newspaper, literary magazine, student council.
5) Willie once worked as a tree trimmer, so clearly he didn't suffer from acrophobia. How about you? Do you have a fear of heights?
Definitely.
6) He wrote the lyrics to one of his biggest hits, "On the Road Again," during a flight, using the airplane barf bag as scrap paper. That was back in 1980. In 2025, do you handwrite onto note paper, or do you make all your "notes to self" digitally?
Paper, what’s that? 😁🤣🤭
7) In 1978, when Willie was singing "Georgia on My Mind," audiences were flocking to see the movie Grease. What's your favorite song from Grease?
8) Also in 1978, Karina Smirnoff was born. After spending her early years in the Ukraine, she came to America and found success on Dancing with the Stars. Are you a DWTS fan?
I used to like it. But I stopped watching a long time ago, when I realized I didn’t know who any of the “stars” are.
Funny story about DWTS. My sister went to high school with Ralph Macchio. She was in drama club, and so was Ralph. Ralph always had big dance numbers in the spring musical, people joked 5gat “Ralph didn’t learn to walk, he learned to dance.”
So when Ralph was cast in DWTS people were speculating as to whether he could dance, but I knew he’d do well. No surprise that he placed 4th, I thought he had a good chance to win.
9) Random question: Do you ever carry a backpack?
Occasionally.
Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!
That was interesting about your sister and Ralph Macchio. I like to watch the show and learn about the new people. I like my digital, but I have always like paper in my hands.
ReplyDelete#7: I saw Frankie Avalon at The TCM Classic Film Festival. He introduced Beach Party (which I love and don't care who knows it). Anyway, they filmed those beach movies in seven days, no days off. He was surprised when, decades later, Randal Kleiser spent several days just on "Beauty School Dropout." He never before had the luxury of multiple takes or a director who had the budget to make sure it was perfect. PS I love that moment on the steps when he fixes his collar. ;)
ReplyDelete#2 Ugh, I went to visit some friends over in Mastic a couple of years ago and took the ferry Orient Point and our plan was for me to spend the day together and go back on the evening ferry. Well Mother Nature had other ideas. When I got to New London they said that the afternoon ferries are “iffy” to check with them when I got there. Well when I got there and my friends picked me they said the last ferry will be at 2. So we changed out plans and had lunch at Hellenic. I was the last car on the last ferry to New London. Let me just say a lot of people had turn an interesting shade of green. And I was still hungry and got some food from the snack bar.
ReplyDelete#3 Here is a tip for you lawyers… if you give the case before lunch break all we jurors do is sit around and shoot the bull until we get our free lunch… then reach the verdict.
#9 Not anymore it is hard enough to just carry me.
Yeah I know about jurors.
DeleteI need a lawyer . . . wish you practiced in Virginia!
ReplyDelete1978... That's probably one of the first years I have some decent memories. I mean, I remember some things from before, but that was the year I turned 7, so I had more awareness.
ReplyDeleteThanks for making me feel old …I graduated from high school in 1978
DeleteOh, I do love that Billy Joel song!
ReplyDeleteI once had a penpal from Long Island who told me she went to high school at his high school (years after he left), so it's weird your next answer was all about LI!
I live about a mile from the house where Billy Joel grew up,
DeleteInteresting play. Wish I played.
ReplyDeleteI've read a few cozy mysteries in the last couple of years that were set on Long Island and it sounded wonderful. I hope to visit it one day.
ReplyDeleteI love Billy Joel. I can't think of one song by him that I don't like. Your "Grease" song pick is one of my favorites from that movie. And Frankie Avalon is a favorite too.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see New Jersey but I think mostly I would like to hear New Jersey because I love the accent of the people. I would consider a short stay there just in hopes of picking up the accent myself. Lol.
Oh. And congratulations on your court wins and may there be many more!
