Gardening

Yes, that was me on the front lawn, raking … a lot of the grass died during the drought last fall, and the dead stuff turned to thatch. I raked for about 90 minutes.  Major improvement but I still have a lot more to do.  I had to stop when I got a blister on my thumb.  Headed to Home Depot tomorrow for some gardening gloves and a better rake.

After I get rid of the thatch we can talk about weeds and grass seed. And after the lawn, the flower beds in the back yard need attention.

Though I did buy a bird bath to go along with the bird feeder, so I am doing some decorative things,

Drew is going to try to cut down these:

I’d like to get the yards in decent shape by Memorial Day.  Assuming Drew buys the new grill he’s been talking about, we will have a barbecue that weekend.  We haven’t done a barbecue since 2022 … Drew always did barbecues for Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day, but we weren’t able to do any of those in 2023 because we moved house, and last summer we moved again and also married off a daughter. But now we have the time to entertain again. I am looking forward to it.

Though I do wish our landlord would remove the pool.  It’s totally unusable and just takes up space. I guess she doesn’t want to spend the money.

A police officer drove by the house while I was out raking, and he waved at me. I guess I looked like a responsible citizen, out there tending to my lawn.

I don’t miss our old house, but I kind of miss the back yard,  it was a nice yard.  Not neglected like our current yard.

I guess I have a summer project.

  1. It's great that you're tackling the yard bit by bit. Looking forward to the weed and grass seed updates. And a new bird bath is a lovely touch!
The police officer waving – you definitely earned that "responsible citizen" badge!
Good luck with your summer project – you've got this!

  2. Beware of birds and other critters feeding off grass seed. I wonder if you could have the pool removed and then bill your landlord for it? That would be one way to deal with it, but the landlord could refuse to pay. Summer projects are good. Good luck.
