Aviation on Long Island

Yesterday I posted a lot of photos of planes flying over my head while I was on my walk, leading John to ask if I live near La Guardia Airport.

Actually, I do.  I am southeast of La Guardia, northeast of JFK and due west of Long Island MacArthur Airport.  I am equidistant from each airport, about a 23 mile drive according to Google Maps.

I am also about 7 1/2 miles from Republic Airport, a regional airport large enough to accommodate small jets.

No wonder the skies above me are so busy!

John identified most of the photos as Delta aircraft, so I suspect I’m under a La Guardia flight path.

Incidentally I am also about 3 1/2 miles from the Cradle of Aviation Museum, located on Charles Lindbergh Blvd.  Long Island’s aviation history goes way back …

I suppose now would be a good time to repost the videos … every year, on Memorial Day weekend, there is an air show at Jones Beach.  I was lucky enough to catch the Thunderbirds rehearsing for the air show a few years ago.

  1. That air show visits my area in October. It's amazing to see. One of my grocery stores is under the flight path or our small local airport, and sometimes while in the parking lot, I can see a plane coming in for a landing. It's neat.

  2. Thanks for confirming your location. I'm sure Delta goes into JFK as well, but not as much.
