Stay (I Missed You)
Saturday 9: Stay (I Missed You) 1994
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) In this week's song, a woman is accused of only hearing what she wants to. "Selective listening" is when you choose to focus on what's important to you and ignore what isn't. Are you often, sometimes, or never guilty of selective listening?
If I’m engrossed in something (a book, an activity on my iPad) I really tune out whatever else may be happening in the room.
2) She turns the radio up when she hears her favorite song. What song have you recently sung along to?
3) This week's featured artist, Lisa Loeb, has always been a big reader. Her band was called Nine Stories as a tribute to her favorite author, JD Salinger. If you were to name a band to honor your favorite author, what would you call it, and why?
Twelfth Night, because it captures a sense of whimsy and merriment.
4) This week's song is her first and biggest hit. "Stay" was on the soundtrack of Reality Bites, a movie starring her friend and one-time neighbor Ethan Hawke. Ethan gave this song to the film's director, Ben Stiller, who agreed it was perfect for the film's closing credits. When you watch a movie, do you stick around for the closing credits?
Of course. Especially for Marvel action movies.
5) In the 1990s, Lisa was popular for her style and appeared on many magazine covers, causing Peoplemagazine to comment, "Though she rose to fame as a singer, she's probably just as well known for her glasses." Do you wear glasses? If yes, do you consider your eyewear purely functional, there to improve your sight, or are your glasses an extension of your personal style?
Yes, I wear glasses. And yes, they have to be stylish and look good on me.
6) Today Lisa does a show on Sirius Radio, and she enjoys broadcasting while her favorite collaborator, her cat, sits on her shoulder. Is there a pet in the room with you as you answer these questions?
I think you’ve already met my twosome, Shadow and Duchess.
7) Lisa raises funds for SCOPE, a charity that helps children from low-income families attend summer camp. When you were a kid, did you go to camp?
I blogged about my camp experience here. I went to day camp from age 3 through age 12. Sports, swimming, music, arts and crafts …
8) In 1994, when this song was popular, the nation's attention was riveted to a white Bronco driven by a man named Al Cowlings. Without looking it up, can you recall why this was newsworthy?
Yeah, even before O.J. died in April 10, I would have recognized Al Cowlings.
9) Random question: Can you do a cartwheel?
You’ve got to be kidding. I couldn’t do it even when I was a child.
Yet somehow I managed to give birth to two girls who excelled at gymnastics.

#2 Now that I thought about, I sang along during the Billy Joel the famous TV concert that they cut off the last sang!
ReplyDelete#5 It seems like the majority of the Sat 9ers wear glasses.
#7 I hated day camp and lucky I only had to go only one summer.
You know I was upset about that Billy Joel special…
DeleteThey reran the Billy Joel special again the following Friday, we watched that one so we didn't miss anything. It was a great concert special.
ReplyDeleteThey had to rerun it. They didn’t have a choice. They offended the audience.
DeleteI saw him at the Garden a few months ago, he really does put on a great show.
I read about your camp. So it was a day camp right? Sounds like so much fun! I used to spend hours at the local park and rec center. Good memories for sure. Your mom must have enjoyed her quiet house. My mom worked most of my childhood.
ReplyDeleteYes, she did. I have three sisters …
DeleteBilly Joel was the first concert I ever went to--1984's Innocent Man tour, it was awe inspiring. I'm so glad that CBS re-aired the entirety of the concert.
ReplyDeleteHe’s amazing, isn’t he?
DeleteShadow and Duchess look like the best possible companions! I'm guessing the tuxedo is the bigger of the two. Am I right?
ReplyDeleteShadow (the tuxedo) is actually smaller than Duchess.
DeleteI was good at cartwheels as a kid. Can't do one now, though. I remember this song so well. It was one I'd sing along with at the top of my lungs.
