If You're Reading This Welcome to  Saturday 9 . What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme! Saturday 9: If You're Reading This (2007) Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it  here . Memorial Day is the federal holiday designated to honor American service people who died in battle.  1) Memorial Day was introduced after the Civil War. War memorials, as well as graves of veterans, are to be decorated with flags and flowers this weekend in a show appreciation. Is there a war memorial in your neighborhood? Of course there is.  If you consider the other side of town my "neighbo

Long Island

What do I mean when I say ‘“I’m from Long Island”? Long Island is a fish-shaped island, its head just across the East River from Manhattan, its tail (the North Fork and South Fork) 120 miles east, sitting in the Atlantic Ocean.  The island is never more than 23 miles wide. The island was formed by a glacier.  The North Shore is glacial moraine, very rocky and hilly. Long Island Sound, to the north of the island, was carved out by the retreating glacier.  The South Shore is out wash plain, very flat terrain. Brooklyn and Queens, two NYC boroughs, occupy the western end of the island.  Most people think of “Long Island” as Nassau and Suffolk Counties.  Nassau is very  suburban, as is western Suffolk.  Eastern Suffolk is more rural, with farms and wineries on the North Fork.  The South Fork is more touristy — think Montauk and the Hamptons. There are several smaller islands that are included in the general description of “Long Island”.  Jones Island and Fire Island, for example, are barr

This week's theme:  Songs from the Eurovision Song Contest in honor of its 65th anniversary. I'm only vaguely aware of the Eurovision contest, it has never been something I watch. So this was a tough one for me. But I really liked one of this year's contestants, Eden Alene Dana International won the contest in 1998 and launched a very successful international career.  (And yes, she is transgender.) A sample of the lyrics in translation: There is a woman who is larger than life There are senses that only she possesses There is magic and there are hard days And a stage that is all hers   To the angels Diva is an empire On the stage Diva is hysteria She is all a love song Netta won in 2018. Shiri Maymon placed 4th in 2005. "HaSheket SheNish'ar"  ( Hebrew :  השקט שנשאר ‎  /haˈʃeket ʃeniˈʃ(ʔ)aʁ/ , lit.  The Silence that Remains )   The song deals with Maimon's realisation that her lover has been unfaithful and her decision to leave him as a result. She seems u

Hear it  here . 1) They lyrics tell us that no matter how low the singer feels, it will raise his spirits to recall the way his lover looks tonight. Share a special moment in your life that brings a smile to your lips, no matter what. Back in 1998 I planned a family vacation to Walt Disney World in Florida. All of the adults  who were going on the trip had been to Disney before, but my daughters -- age 7 1/2 and just turned 6 a

So...

Yesterday's playlist was all Jimmy Buffett.  And I said I had the Caribbean on my mind. But  I didn't say why... Drew and I are going on a Caribbean cruise.   Next year, that is. December 2022. Right now the CDC isn't even sure what protocols will be in place when the cruise lines resume operations this summer.  We want to cruise, but we don't want to deal with ever-changing protocols. Things being what they are, we were able to get a good deal for next year, when (hopefully) everything settles down. It's a great itinerary -- leaving out of Tampa, making port at the Cayman Islands, Panama, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Mexico.   16 months to plan and dream...

And it's a "your choice" week. Well, for some reason my mind is wandering towards the Caribbean these days...so how about some Jimmy Buffett? Bet you didn't know I was a Parrothead ... unless you've been reading this blog for awhile.   My first Buffett concert was at Madison Square Garden. But most of the time we've seen Buffett at Jones Beach, an open air venue. Great  venue, isn’t it? We've even seen Buffett on Broadway,  Saw Escape to Margaritaville twice, and the second time Buffett showed up to sing with the cast. Let's kick off our shoes, grab a cool drink, dig our toes in the sand and change our attitude... Where will we go when the volcano blows? Phins up! Time to hula Let's have some cheeseburgers! And his signature song... I'm going to have to play that one again, it's so much better as an audience participation piece... We've got tickets to see the show in August...assuming it's a "go"...
