Summer Vacation, Part 2

And the weather was cause for concern.

(Musical Interlude: "Tell Laura I Love Her". Ray Peterson)

Hurricane Laura.  It wreaked havoc in the Gulf Coast, then the remnants of the storm drifted north.  We were told to expect thunderstorms and downpours.  We got gray skies and occasional light rain.   Dodged a bullet.

Proper attire for this adventure:

Yeah, the day was a bit chilly.

Destination:  Essex Steam Train and Riverboat

It's the only place left where you can ride a steam train to board a riverboat.

(Musical Interlude: " Paddy on the Railway", the Wolftones)

The train station was built in 1892.  The engine was 100 years old, the cars we rode in were even older.

Yeah, I know.  I complained long and loud about commuting on the Long Island Railroad...but this ride was actually fun.

(Musical Interlude:  "Proud Mary", CCR)

The train takes you to Deep River (an ironic name, the river is actually quite shallow at that point), where you board a (recreated) river boat, the Becky Thatcher, for a tour of the Connecticut River.

So we took the tour.

This building had been a school for students with special needs.  It was recently sold for $45 million, but I don't know what it will become.

Gillette Castle.  Built by the actor William Gillette, it's now a state park.  The castle is closed due to the pandemic, but the grounds are open for hiking.

Very nice tour, very relaxing.

We finished the day with take out from a local place, Wings 'n' Pies.

To be continued...

    1. The river probably is a little cold.

In New York and Connecticut masks are mandated. I wish it were true for the rest of the country because we have effectively contained the virus. The rest of the country has not.

  3. Robin,

Oh, I'd like to see that castle! How cool is that? :) I remember seeing Hammond Castle in New Hampshire in 1987. I'd like to see that place again, too. There's so much to see and do in the New England area. It's going to be super hard to widdling things down. Incidentally masks are mandated in public places in Tennessee, too. I hope this all blows over soon. It's all so tiring! But, y'all had some fun and that's wonderful!
