Ramblings
So some comments about Wicked irk me. I guess if you’re upset over a heroine who fights for marginalized people and a narcissistic, amoral leader who uses propaganda, rumor and misinformation to demonize the heroine … maybe you need to examine your moral compass.
Art, literature and music are not here just to “entertain “ us, but rather, to teach us about the human condition. The arts stir our emotions because they address the things in our lives that are important to us.
I mean, I like mind candy — I watch enough vacuous material on YouTube, which entertains me. But what moves me goes deeper.
Maybe that’s what’s wrong with our society, too much internet and not enough reading.
I love the foreshadowing and symbolism in the Wicked movies. I could write an essay …
…but I won’t. Not today.
But the former English major aches when she hears people disparage literature.
I just put Wicked (the e-book) on reserve at the NY Public Library. (I wasn't a English major but my original college major was history. I have loved books all of my life. It's been too many years since I read the original The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.) The best books make us think, especially when we are transported into a different world that is actually our world, for better or worse. Wanting to know more about the differences between Wicked the book and the first Wicked movie, I ended up at a Facebook Wicked public fan page with over 128,000 followers. I started to read some of the discussions and somehow, the first one I picked randomly quickly disintegrated into political jabs and name calling. That is what our society has become. P.S. if you really want your heart to ache, I recommend reading a young adult book called Feed by M.T. Anderson. I had read it years ago after it came out in 2002 and just reread it after catching part of a Velshi Banned Book club discussing the book. Is the world of Feed where we are heading? It just might be.
ReplyDeleteI will have to check it out
DeletePerhaps this hits too close to home for some...
ReplyDeleteMost literature is commenting on society in one way or another. It's funny how some people are saying that certain stories are "woke". It's like they never paid attention in the first place. Most things have some sort of message.
Exactly.
