The Lady in Red

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: The Lady in Red (1986)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) Is red a color you often wear?

No.  I do have some red things in the closet, but my favorite colors are purple, burgundy and black.

2) In this song, Chris De Burgh is thrilled to be dancing with the woman he loves. Do you recall what was playing the last time you stepped onto the dance floor?

Sort of.  My cousin’s daughter got married in February.  Traditional Jewish wedding.  I specifically remember dancing the hora.  I’m sure I danced to other songs as well.

3) Chris says he wrote this song about the first time he saw his future wife, who wore a red dress when she came to see his band perform. Tell us about a memorable concert going experience.

There were many. I’ll just mention one.

In 2009 Sir Paul McCartney announced that he would perform at the newly-opened Citi Field.  I was determined to get tickets because I was still salty about missing Billy Joel’s Shea Stadium concert the previous year .

You know the history.  When they decided to demolish Shea and replace it with Citi Field, Billy did a couple of concerts billed as The Last Play at Shea.  He had lots of guest stars, including Sir Paul.   It was fitting that Sir Paul close out Shea because of the famous concert he’d done there with the Beatles in the 60’s, at the height of Beatlemania.

They sang this:

So I was thrilled to get tickets to see Sir Paul. And it was an incredible concert.  I blogged about it here (yes, I’ve been blogging since 2009) (Sorry, my old photos were on a platform that doesn’t exist anymore.  They weren’t great photos, so it’s not a tragedy…)

And the best moment?  Billy Joel showed up. They did the same song they’d done at Billy’s concert the previous year.

You can see the whole concert here:

4) Chris' father worked as a diplomat for the United Kingdom. Former US ambassador Robert D. Blackwill believes a diplomat should possess strong writing/speaking skills, meticulous attention to detail, historical knowledge, and stamina. Do you have any of those attributes?

I hope I do, they’re the same skills one needs to practice law.

5) Chris' family owns Bargy Castle, a 15th century fortress in County Wexford, Ireland. Bargy Castle has been converted into a hotel. What's the last hotel you stayed in?

When we stayed in Colonial Williamsburg in September.  I blogged about it here.  We stayed in one of the colonial buildings, a tavern room right in the heart of the historic area.  Technically we were guests of the Williamsburg Inn, but we really didn’t use the hotel amenities.

6) Chris is a wine connoisseur who sold a collection of vintage reds for over $500,000. If you suddenly came into $500,000, what would you do with it?

That, along with my savings, etc., would mean I could retire now, instead of four or five years from now.

7) In 1986, when this song was popular, singer/actress Lady Gaga was born in Manhattan. Have you been to New York City?

The subtitle of this blog is “life in and around NYC is insane”.  At various times in my life I’ve lived and/or worked in the city.  Currently I’m more suburban, but I do visit the city often.  My daughter and son-in-law live in Manhattan.

8) Also in 1986, NHL Hall of Famer Jacques Plante died. Are you a hockey fan?

My sport is baseball, but I do like hockey.  I’m an Islanders fan.

Back in the day, when the Islanders won four consecutive Stanley Cups … the Islanders played at the Nassau Coliseum, which was just down the road from my Alma Mater, Hofstra University (I attended law school 1981-1984).  The victory parade down Hempstead Turnpike went right past the university.  Of course we all showed up to cheer.

9) Random question – You just slid behind the wheel and are about to embark on a long road trip. Which of these famous Williams would you choose as your navigator: Willie Nelson, Bill Murray, or William, Prince of Wales?

I’ll take the prince, thanks.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!
