Music Monday
A freedom of choice week.
When I was in junior high (early 1970’s) every child had some sort of musical education. If you played an instrument you were in orchestra or band, singers took chorus. Everyone else took general music.
I took chorus. The teacher said I was an alto.
The sopranos usually sang melody and we altos sang harmony.
Except when the teacher chose a Karen Carpenter song.
She had the most incredible alto. And when the chorus sang her songs, we altos finally got to sing the melody.
So today I will be playing some of her best.
And before I play the last one …a memory.
It was sometime in the mid 1990’s. I was in a store in Penn Station, commuting home from my job in Manhattan. A Carpenters song was playing … and I overheard a teenage girl say “It sounds like Christmas!”
She had recognized the voice, but never heard any Carpenters music except their Christmas album.
It’s a bit early for Christmas, but …
Karen Carpenter had a beautiful alto voice. Thanks for the concert! ☺ I much prefer lower register vocals for both male and female singers.
ReplyDeleteThe Carpenters were a special kind of easy listening back in the day. Thank you for inviting them to the show.
ReplyDeleteKaren Carpenter's voice is not only uniquely identifiable but beautiful. I loved this at home concert of some of the best songs by The Carpenters. It's interesting that you closed with "Merry Christmas, Darling". I am using that song in my Dec. 1st BOTB. Maybe, you'll want to cast a vote in that battle. Thanks for being part of the 4M dance party, Robin. Now to get back into the kitchen. I'm bringing together a new recipe for cornbread stuffing that I'm preparing for Thanksgiving. Have a boogietastic week, darlin'! xo
ReplyDeleteI loved the Carpenters back in the day, but Karen Carpenter's tragic death makes me feel sad when I hear her voice. What a wonderful voice she had. A voice like an angel.
ReplyDeleteIt's so sad to see her healthy at that one concert, in the blue pantsuit, as opposed to her other images. She had a haunting voice and she died too young, but not in vain. Due to her anorexia, this mental disease became known and girls could start getting the help.
