Rest in Peace
The Mets retired his number in 2022, belatedly keeping a promise made in the 1970’s.
He played in the Negro League, then the NY Giants and the San Francisco Giants before ending his career with the Mets.
One of the greatest players of all time, he died yesterday at age 93.
Rest in peace, Willie Mays.
Besides being one of the best ballplayers of all time, Willie Mays well deserved his Presidential Medal of Freedom. At least he lived to see his Negro League stats included in his MLB records. RIP.
ReplyDeleteThe Giants and Cardinals will play at Rickwood Stadium tomorrow. This was a Negro League ballpark where Mays got his start. He was invited to be 5bere but had to decline.
DeleteBack in the '60's, we all thought he would be the one to break Babe Ruth's record. Willie was in a class by himself. That catch he made against Vic Wertz in `1954 is the stuff legends are made of. It didn't matter what team you were a fan of, you were a Willie Mays fan. May he rest in eternal peace.
ReplyDeleteVery sad. Glad that he lived a long life.
