So, the concert

Drew picked me up and we drove to the train station.  Got a parking spot right where we wanted to be.  Uneventful ride into the city.  So far so good.

Madison Square Garden is directly above Penn Station, so it’s an easy walk from the train,

Yeah, 20,00 seats available, 20,000 tickets sold.

Drew bought me a t shirt. I’ll show it to you later,

And then … the glitch.  The Garden uses only electronic ticketing, and something went wrong when I tried to download the tickets to my phone.  After a brief discussion at the box office — they printed paper tickets for us — we were inside!

MSG has a deal at the concession stands — the doors open at 7:00, and anything you buy before 7:30 is half price.  We bought pastrami sandwiches from the Carnegie Deli.  The original Carnegie Deli was a NYC landmark.  The current incarnation at the Garden lacks in comparison,

We took our seats.

And then the house lights went down, and the familiar strains of Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Oyt On Broadway) filled the arena.

Billy Joel broke tradition tonight, he didn’t have a guest star join him on stage.  Slightly disappointing.  But the show was otherwise absolutely wonderful.  Billy talks to the audience a lot, and the audience loves it.  He sang most of his big hits, a few album favorites, and some interesting covers.

Here’s the full Setlist.

Mike DeGuidice sang lead on the Zeppelin cover, and also gave us some opera before Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.  Billy did a great version of Sunshine of Your Love.  I didn’t realize he was such a fan of Cream.

Our seats were decent, but I was too far back to take any meaningful video of the show.  I’m going to check YouTube to see if anyone posts video.

Wonderful show, well worth the wait.

And when the evening was over, we walked back to Penn Station and got on a train without having to wait.  Even got seats!

  1. I would have enjoyed that playlist. Husband is a big Led Zep fan, plus we have most of Billy Joel's albums. But 20,000 people? I am not a fan of noisy indoor venues, alas, especially those holding more people than the village near where I live (I know, funny for someone who grew up in NYC to say.). Shea Stadium would have been more my speed but obviously I'm just a few years late for any such concert. I am happy you finally made it after three years!! Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  2. Yay! You finally got to see him live. It was a long, hard journey to get there. At least getting to the actual concert was largely uneventful.
