Saturday 9

Kung Fu Fighting

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!

Saturday 9: Kung Fu Fighting (1974)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) Have you ever taken a martial arts class?

Does tai chi count?  During the pandemic a local yoga/tai chi studio was offering Zoom classes.  I tried a few classes, but the Zoom connection was so poor I stopped participating.

Recently I discovered some tai chi instructors on YouTube, so I’ve been experimenting again.

2) In this song, Carl Edwards sings about funky Chinatown. Many cities – including San Francisco, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Vancouver, London and Antwerp – have a Chinatown. Have you ever visited Chinatown?

Um, just because I know the names of at least four restaurants and a bakery on Mott Street doesn’t mean anything, does it?

Though if you want a more authentic experience you don’t go to Manhattan, you go to Flushing,Queens.

3) Many Chinese restaurants give out fortune cookies. Can you recall one of your fortunes?

Funny story.  Drew had a standing joke, he told it every time we went to a Chinese restaurant.  He’d break open the fortune cookie and pretend to read his fortune: “Help, I am a prisoner in a Chinese fortune cookie factory.” And then he’d read the real fortune.

Well, one day he opened a fortune cookie and said “You’re not going to believe this.”

His actual fortune?  “Help, I am a prisoner in a Chinese fortune cookie factory.”

4) This week's featured artist, Carl Edwards, was born in Jamaica, spent his childhood in the US, and relocated to England. Have you ever lived abroad?

No

5) In 1974 he became the first Jamaican to have a #1 hit in the US with this song. Have you been to Jamaica?

I hate changing trains in Jamaica …

Sorry, a little Long Island Railroad joke there, Jamaica Station is a hub …

But yes, I’ve been to Jamaica.  Here’s a photo I took of the Green Grotto Caves in Jamaica.

October 26, 2016.  We were on a Caribbean cruise and stopped in Jamaica.  Visited the grotto and Dunns River Falls.

6) When this week's song was on the charts, ABC TV had a hit with the show Kung Fu. Today it's available to stream. Were you a fan?

No.

7) Also in 1974, the FIFA World Cup was played in West Germany. Have you been following the FIFA World Cup this year?

Considering they’re playing some of the games at MetLife …er, New York/New Jersey Stadium, how could I possibly avoid it?

8) Two of 1974's most popular toys were popular with adults, too. Would you prefer a Rubik's Cube or a Magic 8 Ball?

I had a Rubik’s Cube ,too frustrating,  I’ll take a Magic 8 Ball, thanks,

9) Random question: Have you ever cut someone else's hair?

No.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

  2. We had some games played in Kansas City, I lived in KC when I was young, I live in southwest Missouri now, but close enough. I enjoyed some games.
That is neat that you did some tai chi on zoom.
#3...Drew's joke! That is funny. Did he keep the one he got that actually said that? That is crazy! Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

  3. I have a DVD that features a really great Tai Chi exercise, it's by David Dorian Ross. You want to skip the things that teach you and go straight into the morning routine and then follow along with it. (I just found him on youtube, he has a channel. I'd never thought to look before.)

  4. I actually, right now, have both a Magic 8 Ball and a Rubik's Cube. They're packed away someplace, so I can't put my hands on them right this second...

I had a lovely conversation with a seat mate on the airplane as I was flying to Ohio. He was on his way to one of the World Cup games. Sadly, his team lost the game after that.

  5. I have a Magic 8 Ball, my students love it! I think I'll look into Tai Chi, especially when I retire and can take classes at the Rec Center.
