Saturday 9

Come See About Me

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Come See About Me (1964)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Diana Ross sings that she's given up her friends for her boyfriend. Have you ever had a lover your friends disapproved of? Has a friend ever dated someone you didn't care for?

No.

2) Without her man at her side she feels uncertain. Let's be more positive: what's something you're sure of?

I’ve been on vacation this week, so I’m sure there’s a ton of work waiting for me Monday morning.

3) When this song was popular, the Supremes were known for their elegant hair and wardrobe. When was the last time you got dressed up?

We live in a very casual society, don’t we?  My office is business casual, and for the most part I work from home.  I still have to “suit up” for court, but I haven’t been near a courthouse for several months.

Last time I got dressed up for a social event was my cousin’s wedding in February.

4) The Supremes went on to have a dozen #1 hits. This must have been hard for Betty McGlown, the fourth Supreme, who left the group before they recorded their first song. Can you think of an opportunity you missed?

Yes, and I am still salty about it.  1981. My first year of law school. I came down with mono.  My doctor let me return to class but told me “just class and the library.  Nothing else.”

That was the year Simon and Garfunkel reunited for a concert in Central Park, and everyone in my dorm took the train into  Manhattan for the concert. Everyone except me.

5) After she left the Supremes, lead singer Diana Ross went on to have a successful solo career. But it hasn't always been easy. She stumbled in her high heels and broke her ankle as she left the stage after a November 2012 concert. Have you taken a tumble recently?

Back in April I tripped on an uneven sidewalk.  Sprained my finger and cracked the screen on my iPhone.

6) Ever the trooper, she honored her commitment to perform at a White House-sponsored Christmas concert just weeks later, even though her leg was still in a cast. Tell us about a time when you "played hurt."

Back in the 90’s I was on a business trip to Philadelphia.  I took a bad fall in the hotel lobby, sprained my ankle and limped around Philadelphia for four days.  When I got home I finally saw a doctor, and I wound up in a soft cast for two weeks.

7) In 1964, when this song was popular, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was born. What was in your most recent Amazon shipment?

Just because the Amazon driver has memorized my address …

Last thing I bought was a replacement battery for my Ring camera.  So exciting.

8) Also in 1964, women still routinely wore white gloves to complete an outfit. Short gloves that ended at the wrist were popular for everyday wear. What fashion trend do you wish would come back?

Not a specific item, but can we at least go back to “dressy casual” instead of “slob”  for nice restaurants and the theater?

9) Random question: If you were in the witness protection program, what new name and occupation would you choose for yourself?

I’ve never really wanted to be anything except what I am …

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!
