Road trip day 4 part 2 — a-haunting we will go.
So our Tuesday night ghost walk became our Wednesday night ghost walk.
When we were here in 2012, the ghost walk was simply a tour guide (not in costume) walking up and down Duke of Gloucester Street, pointing out buildings and telling ghost stories.
Tonight, though ….
We met in the Market Square. While we were waiting for the group to gather, one of the employees explained that there were several unofficial ghost tours because Duke of Gloucester Street is a public thoroughfare and open to anyone, but the ghost tour sponsored by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation actually takes you into several of the historic buildings.
Our tour guide was an older gentleman in knee breeches and a tricorn hat, who led us down Duke of Gloucester Street with a lantern in his hand. He told.stories as we walked.
The first question he asked, “Is anyone here staying in the Market Square Tavern and have you heard any unusual noises?” Well, Drew and I are staying in the Market Square Tavern and yes, we’ve heard weird noises at night. Then our guide launched into a tale of a Confederate soldier who haunts the tavern and the Market Square. Um, yeah, this is where I’m supposed to sleep …
So he led us to three different houses — the James Getty house, the George Wyeth house, and the Peyton Randolph house. In each house, we sat in a room lit only by candlelight while our guide explained a bit of the history of the house before telling more ghost stories. He was quite dramatic …
So tonight I shall be looking for a Confederate soldier with a red rose pinned to his shirt…
