Architecture
So when I walk north into Hicksville I get to see houses that are not Levitt.
This house is a Tudor Revival. The style was popular in the 1920’s and 1930’s. You see a lot of this style in Teaneck, NJ, Queens, NY (mostly in Forest Hills, Kew Gardens and Jamaica Estates) and Garden City here on Long Island. There’s a neighborhood in Mineola where all the houses are Tudors. But here in Hicksville they are few and far between.
This these are called “high ranch” or “raised ranch”, very popular in the 60’s. The variations you see on these houses are mostly cosmetic. They were built much larger than Levitt homes, so there’s less need to expand.
And finally, the houses that made me nostalgic…split levels.
The basic look.
The Tudor Revivals are gorgeous. I'm used to mostly ranch houses. They build two stories for new construction now, they can fit more houses on a lot. Less yard.
ReplyDeleteMy husband lived as a teen in a split level, which his mother lived in until 10 years ago. I love the stonework (or stonework look) on the first house.
ReplyDeleteOh no! Not a McMansion. Yikes.
