Music Monday

Took a walk through my neighborhood and found myself thinking the lyrics of a song,  All the leaves are brown … and the sky is gray … I’ve been for a walk …

You know the song, I posted it last week.

So later, in the car, I asked Amazon Music to play California Dreamin’ … and soon the wonderful harmonies of the Mamas and Papas filled the car.

But the thing about Amazon Music …I didn’t specify the artist … so I got every cover version of the song as well …

Jose Feliciano had a very interesting version, with lots of Spanish lyrics at the end …

Sia’s version was different …

I’d never heard of Diana Krall before … she’s a jazz artist.

And finally, The Beach Boys.  They changed a lyric …just one line … and changed the whole meaning of the song.  But I really like their video.

Did you catch the missing lyric?

Yeah, The Beach Boys don’t sing If I didn’t tell her, I could leave today …

In that one line, the singer explains what’s anchoring him to the bleak winter location.  It’s missing from their version.  In their version we are left to wonder why the singer doesn’t leave, why the preacher knows the singer is going to stay …

  1. What an interesting collection arrangements of the song. I like all of them. Sia's is uniquely haunting. Well played.

  3. I am not a fan of Krall, but this one I actually could sit through! She is usually too annoying for me. Love the others especially. Johnny Cash

  4. Thanks for sharing Diana Krall's version. The instrumental break was fantastic, and I don't find her at all annoying.

  6. Clever take on the theme. Of the covers, I had only heard the Beach Boys' cover before. I really liked Sia's cover, and the last half of Jose Feliciano's.
