Wednesday Medley -- cookies

this week, Terri's questions are all about the cookie:

NATIONAL OREO COOKIE DAY
Be ready to observe by having your glass of milk handy as it is National Oreo Cookie Day.  This day is recognized across the nation each year on March 6th.
The Oreo sandwich cookie is made up of two chocolate disks containing a sweet cream filling and is loved by millions.  Since it’s introduction, the Oreo cookie has become the best-selling cookie in the United States.
The National Biscuit Company (today known as Nabisco) first developed and produced the “Oreo Biscuit” in 1912 at its Chelsea factory in New York City. Today, the block on which the factory was located is known as “Oreo Way”.
  • The name “Oreo” was first trademarked on March 14, 1912.
  • The first Oreo cookies in the United States sold for 25 cents a pound in clear glass topped novelty cans.
  • In 1912, the Oreo Biscuit was renamed to “Oreo Sandwich”.
  • In 1948, the Oreo Sandwich was renamed to “Oreo Creme Sandwich”.
  • William A. Turnier developed the modern-day Oreo design in 1952 to include the Nabisco logo.
  • Nabisco’s principal food scientist, Sam Porcello, developed the modern Oreo cookie filling.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Grab a glass of milk and a handful of Oreos to enjoy and use #NationalOreoCookieDay to post on social media.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
1.  Are you able to pass by a plate of cookies and not take one or are you a bit of a 'Cookie Monster'?
It takes an enormous amount of self discipline for me to walk past a plate of cookies without indulging.
2.  Tell us about your favorite cookie. Have your tastes changed since you were a kid?
Of course my tastes have changed.  As a kid I mostly ate the cookies my mom bought in the supermarket -- Hydrox (they were kosher, Oreos didn't become kosher until the 1990's, and my parents kept a kosher home when I was a child), chocolate chip cookies, graham crackers.   I still like all of those, but...when it's a special occasion, or I feel self-indulent, I go to the bakery and get  rainbow cookies and chocolate-dipped lace cookies.

3.  Enquiring minds want to know if you are a dunker and, if so, do you dunk in milk, coffee, or tea?

I am not a dunker.  I don't even dunk biscotti in my coffee.
Remember the jingle "Oh, a kid will eat the middle of an Oreo first and save the chocolate cookie outside for last"?  That's me with an Oreo or any other sandwich cookie.

4.  It is that time of year and they are selling them on every corner and in front of every store!  Do you buy Girl Scout cookies and if you do, which is your favorite?
I don't go looking for Girl Scout cookies, but if a coworker is helping her daughter's troop, I'll buy  some Thin Mints.
5.  Raw cookie dough.  Yay or Nay?
Nay.  I don't understand the appeal.  On the other hand, I used to like to lick the spoon from cake batter.
6.  Please tell us something random about your week!!
Another thought about cookies.  Or rather, a memory.
My grandmother was born in Poland, and came to the United States in the early 1920's.  She settled in NYC, and, like most young women in her circumstances, she took jobs in several different factories.
She often mentioned that at one time she worked (as she put it) "by Sunshine Biscuits".
Yes, my grandmother used to make Hydrox cookies.

Comments

  1. I'm so glad your grandma came here in the 20s. My mind can't help taking me down that historical trail and the lives of those who remained in Poland.

If I do have a Oreo, I will discard the middle and gnaw on the rest of the cookie. A little crazy I know. Thanks for the jingle. Hadn't heard it in years.

  3. Hydrox cookies remind me of my Grandmother as well! She always kept them in her cookie jar. Have a great week!

  4. I heard that Hydrox was made first. Nabisco stole their idea and ran with it.

I never could stand Thin Mints. And I sold Girl Scout cookies for years. (I know, I'm weird. Thin Mints are by far the most favorite flavor.)
