In shock

Drew celebrated a milestone birthday last year. I suppose he must have  been feeling his age, because as the summer rolled around, he grew very nostalgic.  He started looking for old friends, people he had not spoken to in decades.

Drew's parents had been members of a community theater group.  He'd go to rehearsals with his parents, and hang out with the children of the other members of the group.  David's parents were also members of the group; Drew was 13, and David must have been 11 or 12, when they met.

It had been 40 years since he'd spoken to David, but he wanted to reconnect.

He found David on Facebook.  When they got on the phone, it was as if those 40 intervening years vanished.  David was living in Colorado, but was planning to visit Long Island in November for his high school reunion.  We made dinner plans; we had a lovely evening with David and another friend, Christa. We discussed a possible trip to Colorado next summer to visit David and met his wife.

Christa called this morning with some tragic news.

David was the victim of a horrific crime.  He was killed during a carjacking.

Drew said:  "They didn't have to kill him, he would have given them the car if they'd asked for it."

Today has been a very difficult day.

  1. I'm so sorry. So tragic. My thoughts go out to David's family and friends. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  2. I am so sorry. Random crime can come out of nowhere to snatch someone away. (My father's wife's best friend was murdered by some random drug-addicted burglar.) It's rough for the survivors.
