Music Monday

It’s another “your choice” week,   And today I am playing  the music of a man who has succeeded as both a solo artist and as a member of a famous quartet. Yes, today’s post features music you won’t find on Spotify.  Today I am playing the music of Neil Young. Let’s start with a few from CSNY. This one was written by Joni Mitchell about a little music festival …    And here they are at Farm Aid.    This was a solo hit.   More from Farm Aid    And we close it out with “Heart of Gold”

Saturday 9

All of Me Welcome to  Saturday: 9 . What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to  answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions! Saturday 9: All of Me (1932) Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it  here . 1) In this song, Louis Armstrong calls his girl "baby." What's the last endearment someone used when speaking to you? In my family we don't tend to use terms of endearment.  We do tell each other that we love each other, but we don't use words like "sweetie" or "dear" or "honey"  -- especially "honey", because  I have a sister named Honey.   2)  ...

Hunkering Down

Nor’easter on the way… They say we may get over a foot of snow.

Another icon has died.  And this one felt like a punch to the gut. Less than a year after  Jim Steinman  passed away, Marvin Lee Aday, known to the world as Meat Loaf, has died. He first came to our attention in The Rocky Horror Picture Show . But he captured our attention two years later, with his debut album. The title cut    The controversial "Paradise By the Dashboard Light", with the infamous commentary by Phil Rizzuto.  There are people who believe Rizzuto didn't know what he was really describing, that he didn’t understand the sexual innuendo.  Riiight....   Meat’s background in acting gave his music a theatrical tone that really added depth to his videos. You can see it in "Read 'Em and Weep"   "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" "I Would do Anything For Love"    And we close it out with this song, the first song written for Bat Out of Hell . I guess Heaven got tired of waiting...

Let’s Go Islanders!

Image
Way back in the 70’s and 80’s, everyone on Long Island was into hockey.  After all, our Islanders won four Stanley Cups …four in a row! 79-80, 80-81, 81-82 and 82-83. Back then they played at the Nassau Coliseum, a facility owned by Nassau County. The Coliseum is located on Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale, just down the road from my alma mater, Hofstra University. I never got to see a game at the Coliseum, but I did get to see the victory parade in 1982. My interest in hockey kind of faded after that.   Until now. I was offered tickets to see the Islanders play the Arizona Coyotes on Friday, January 21 at their brand-new home, the UBS Arena.  And of course I accepted the tickets. The Islanders’ new home is located across the road from the famed Belmont Racetrack, home of the third jewel in the Triple Crown.  The racetrack and arena are located in Nassau County (a huge improvement from the Isles’ temporary home in Brooklyn), just across the border from the NYC B...

I'm the Only One Welcome to  Saturday 9 . We love memes, however, and here is today's meme! Saturday 9: I'm the Only One (1993) Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it  here . 1) Melissa Etheridge sings this song as though her heart is breaking. What's your favorite love song? Is it about falling in love, being in love, or losing love? This is a sad song. The singer can 't live with his love but can't leave her either, and convinces himself he's got a reason to stay. 2) "I'm the Only One" is a favorite song of  American Idol  contestants, having been pe...

Facebook fun

I belong to a Facebook group that focuses on Jewish food.  I posted this photo today, describing my everything bagel with cream cheese, lox and onion as “the real breakfast of champions”. So the group had a lengthy discussion about what to put on a bagel. And a lot of people asked “what does the mug say?” משהו   ( mashu ) is the Hebrew word for "something" and  בעברית  ( b'ivrit ) is Hebrew for "in Hebrew".  Mashu b'ivrit = something in Hebrew. The mug literally says "something in Hebrew". I love a good pun.
