Road trip day one
So we decided to do a road trip to Virginia. Two history geeks headed to Colonial Williamsburg to revisit our country’s glorious past.
Road trip!
It’s roughly a six hour drive from Long Island. So we decided to leave bright snd early Sunday morning,
Up at 6 AM, pack up the car, made sure everything is in order for the cat sitter … we have an excellent cat sitter, and I’m not just saying that because I’m her mom …
Said goodbye to Duchess and Shadow. Do cats understand? I’m not sure … but somebody crawled into my suitcase ..
A quick stop at 7-11 for coffee, and then …
South and west, past Kennedy Airport
And headed to the Verrazano Bridge
Yes, you can see ships waiting to enter New York Harbor.
The view from the bridge
Then across Staten Island and into New Jersey.
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike…they’ve all gone to look for America …
And before long
We were in Delaware for a hot minute before crossing into Maryland.
Nice view.
And then we passed the Maryland House rest stop. It’s a. modern facility now, but in 1974 I got my first practical lesson in segregation here. I told that story here.
Then
A little fall color
Drove around our nation’s capital. Yes, that’s the Washington Monument in the distance,
And finally
Which had us singing
But still miles to go …
Richmond
And finally, Williamsburg. Checked into our hotel (more about that later) and grabbed dinner at a chain restaurant — too tired from the long drive to seek out anything better. Fielded three calls from the cat sitter. Then back to the hotel to relax. Our colonial adventure begins tomorrow…
Sounds like you didn't have much trouble on the drive. That's good. Enjoy your vacation.
ReplyDeleteForgetting to carry something that would be useful on the road, often happens to me as well! Have a nice time!

If I drove 6 1/2 hours. I would get to SF. 14 hours to the Oregon Border. My parents went to Williamsburg and bought me a cookbook. My dad met with the Secretary of HUD in DC They also visited a friend in PA. Not sure if they drove or took the train. I wish I would have asked.
ReplyDeleteLots of nice photo opportunities on your way! I look forward to your sharing more. Fun you added in the songs to go with the trip. In 6 1/2 hours I might get to Canada, but it would be pushing it. Nearly there. 5 1/2 I'd be back in my home town in CA. Road trip snacks are nice, I usually pick things I don't often get.
