Saturday 9

Hold On

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Hold On (1990)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This song gives encouragement to someone who is enduring heartache. Have you more recently given support, or received it?

My friend has a difficult relationship with her mother-in-law.  Mother-in-law just entered hospice care, family members are flying in from various parts of the country, and things are obviously tense.  I’m trying to be a supportive friend.

2) "Hold On" is featured prominently in the 2011 movie Bridesmaids. It's an anthem for the friends in the film and they love to sing it together. Is there a song that reminds you of good times with a good friend?

Too many to name.  It’s funny how a song can bring you back to another moment in time.

3) The video for this song finds Wilson Phillips outdoors on a snowy mountainside and then on a sandy beach. What's the view outside your window?

I’m in my home office.  This window faces the fence between my house and my neighbor’s.

4) The mountain segments were filmed in California's San Gabriel Mountains. The girls were flown to the set by helicopter. Have you ever been in a helicopter?

No.

5) The members of Wilson Phillips are authentic "California Girls." Wendy and Carnie Wilson's father is Brian Wilson, who wrote the Beach Boys hit. Chynna Phillips is the daughter of John and Michelle Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas, who sang "California Dreamin'." Have you been to California? If yes, where did you visit?

In 2011 I had a business trip to San Diego. Flew there on a Wednesday night, flew home Saturday.   I didn’t have much time to do touristy things.  But I thought the city was beautiful and I’d love to go back,

6) Another generation of the Wilson family has entered the music business. Carnie's daughter/Brian Wilson's granddaughter, Lola Bonfiglio, participated in the current season of American Idol. Has a family member followed you in your chosen profession?

I think you’re all going to get tired of the story about my mother, who went to law school after I did.  My younger sister also went to law school, and she’s an assistant district attorney.  My older daughter is a court clerk.  Younger daughter does business development for a large law firm.

Which explains why, if I ever get called for jury duty, I’ll never be out on a jury,

7) In 1990, when this song was popular, satellite radio was in its infancy and streaming was unheard of. Our cars gave us a choice of AM/FM and maybe CD player/tape deck. When you're driving and a favorite song comes on, are you more likely to sing along if you're alone? Or don't you care if anyone hears you?

Drew and I sing in the car whenever a good song comes on.  He sings beautifully.  I … sing.

8) Also in 1990, actor Alan Hale Jr. died. He was "the skipper" on Gilligan's Island. Without looking it up, can you name the other six castaways? (If not the actors, then their characters.)

Gilligan of course.  Mr. And Mrs. Howe, Ginger, Maryanne, and the Professor.

9) Random question: What superhero would you like to have as your best friend?

Hmmm…do I want someone like Superman or Wonder Woman, with superhuman powers?  Or someone like Iron Man or Batman, with all those gadgets?

Maybe I’ll just hang out with the Guardians of the Galaxy.  Best of both worlds, and with a great soundtrack.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

  1. I haven't spent that much time in San Diego but thought it was beautiful. They have a terrific zoo, too. (I rode an elephant!)

  7. I have been to San Diego many times since I am 90 minutes away and our family had had some fun times there. My husband and I spent a night at the Del Corando for honeymoon before heading to Ensenada Mexico. We were there last year and we always go to the Old Town and the Seaport Village. I hope you can get back there again!
