weekend fun -- a movie and a baseball game
Baseball is back! Last night we saw our first Long Island Ducks game of the season. The Ducks play in the Atlantic League -- independent from Major League baseball -- in a 6,000 seat ballpark.
It's small and intimate, and feels very "home town", especially when the team invites all the local school groups, scout troops, and little league teams to participate in activities on the field. Last night, for example, an elementary school chorus sang the national anthem while there was one scout troop acting as color guard on the first base line and a second scout troop doing the same on the third base line. The chorus came back during the 7th inning stretch to sing "God Bless America"
It was also fireworks night; there was a short fireworks presentation after the game. There were also short bursts of fireworks during "The Star Spangled Banner" ("and the rockets' red glare"...boom!), after the 7th inning stretch, and when one of the Ducks hit a home run. The fog rolled in by the end of the evening, so the fireworks were a bit "faded", but still fun to watch.
And it was a good game. The visiting team, York Revolution, scored a run in the first inning. The Ducks came back in the bottom of the first to tie the game. The Ducks took the lead in the 5th inning -- Fields hit a home run -- and eventually won the game 8-1.
And as for the movies...
Well, I no longer have to avoid "spoilers" because we finally saw Avengers:Endgame. It was definitely worth the wait.
Spoiler alert, I'm going to talk about the movie now.
As anticipated, the plot focuses on time travel.
After the Thanos snap causes half of of the population to disappear, the remaining Avengers travel to a remote planet to retrieve the Infinity Stones from Thanos. Upon learning that Thanos has destroyed the stones, the Avengers must travel back in time to recover the stones and undo the snap.
They travel back to the times and locations where they know the stones to be (i.e., the previous movies). So we see Captain America fighting a previous version of himself. We see Thor return to Asgard and have a long conversation with his mother. And Tony Stark has an emotional encounter with his father Howard.
Of course the Avengers succeed, but not without sacrifice and loss. Hawkeye and Black Widow arguing about who will sacrifice his/her life so that the other may retrieve the Soul Stone. Tony Stark sacrificing his life to bring back all those who'd been snapped.
And Captain America passes the torch...er, shield...as well. After returning the stones to their homes in the past, Steve Rogers decides to stay there and marry the love of his life...
Favorite scene? Early in the movie, the Avengers discuss whether time travel is possible, and mention the following movies/TV shows:

And, of course, the ending sets us up for the next movie -- Spiderman opens later this summer.
I've meant some who likes minor league games over the major leagues.
