Ryder Cup

When I woke up this morning the sky was full of helicopters.  Long Island is blessed with an abundance of public parks and facilities.  Bethpage State Park is about a 15 minute drive from my home. Bethpage State Park has several golf courses, including the famous (infamous?) Bethpage Black.  Bethpage Black is suitable for professional golf tournaments and has hosted the US Open multiple times. (I remember   2012  and   2019 .) And this weekend it’s the site of the Ryder Cup. That means crowds, traffic, extra security … The park is small, so they’ve set up public parking at Farmingdale State College and will run a shuttle bus.  They’re running shuttle buses from the Long  Island Railroad station in Farmingdale  (it’s closer to the park than the station in Bethpage).  People who live near the park are renting out their driveways, and sometimes their houses, to golf fans.  Farmingdale has a cute downtown near the railroad station...

And still more ramblings

Hosting dinner means you shop and cook, and you clean the house before everyone arrives.  Then you clean the house after everyone leaves.  But spending time with my kids is so worth it. House is back to normal … for now. And I’ve got leftovers, so I won’t have to cook … On September 13 the Mets hosted an old timers game, Team Shea Stadium vs Team Citi Field. We weren’t home that day, so we DVR’d the game and watched it yesterday.  Such memories!  Piazza, Franco, Granderson, Leiter, Santana, Dickey, Agbayani…Bobby Valentine doing his shtick …and a moment of silence for Davey Johnson … Current team is still hanging in for the wild card.  Last night’s game … ugh .   The season ends in just a few days, on the 28th.  We will see what happens … Looks like the Yankees clinched a playoff spot. I was in the cat food aisle at the supermarket and had an interesting conversation.  The guy is two years older than me, celebrated his 11th birthday the day ...

Souvenirs from our vacation That’s hand-blown glass from Jamestown. I also bought a few t shirts and, as I mentioned earlier, a sweatshirt because I was freezing.   The view from my daughter’s living room. Fall foliage predictions  for the NYC/Long Island area — we are supposed to reach peak color on November 6.   Has migration season started?  I heard Canada geese fly over my house sometime after midnight.  We have geese that live on Long Island and don’t migrate, so I don’t know … The future of the Mets is starting to look bleak … sigh.  Their last World Series appearance was 2015.  Their last World Series win was 1986. No October baseball is a real possibility. Halloween decorations are starting to pop up around the neighborhood.  I can’t think of Halloween until the Jewish High Holy Days are over. Today is Rosh Hashanah.  Yom Kippur is October 2.  Don’t mention Halloween until October  3. But yeah, it really is time to think of ...

It’s fall y’all! Today is the autumn equinox.  The season has officially changed.  It’s catching up with the weather, I’ve felt a definite chill in the air. Fall foliage season.  I read that although  climate change  has generally delayed fall in recent decades, this year’s dry summer is pushing the timeline up. The season will be bright, brief and early. So we spent almost a week at a nice hotel. I felt like a princess.  But there is nothing so humbling as coming home and dealing with kitty litter boxes…we all know who’s really in charge in this house,  Good thing they’re so cute. The Mets are still hanging on to a wild card position.  The Ducks, alas, did not make the playoffs.  Wait until next year … Went out to lunch with friends Sunday,  we are fortunate to live near the ocean and have wonderful seafood restaurants nearby. The annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly takes place this week.  Traffic in Manhattan will be...
