Saturday 9

Linger

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!

Saturday 9: Linger (1993)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries sings that her lover has her wrapped around his finger. Do you feel that anyone has you wrapped around their finger?

One guess

2) This was one of the first songs Delores and Noel Hogan wrote together. They performed it often live and perfected it before going into the studio to record it approximately two years later. Because they had polished the performance and arrangement, it's not a surprise that it was the biggest hit off their debut album. Tell us about a time when your preparation paid off.

Can’t think of anything right now.

3) The Cranberries believed the moody black-and-white video (linked above) playing on MTV contributed to the song's popularity. MTV and VH1 were highly influential when they showed music videos and interviews 24/7 during the 1980s and 1990s. Do you recall watching music videos on MTV and/or VH1?

I want my MTV!

4) The Cranberries were founded by brothers Noel and Mike Hogan in their hometown in Limerick, Ireland. The River Shannon runs through Limerick. Do you live near a river?

Long Island is not exactly famous for its rivers.  The East River, which separates Brooklyn and Queens from Manhattan, isn’t really a river.  It’s an estuary.

The key rivers on the island are the Peconic and the Nissequogue, both located in  Suffolk County.  Kind of far from my house.

Here in Nassau County, we don’t really have rivers.  We have streams, brooks and creeks,.  There’s  a town called Valley Stream.  It’s named for a stream.

Then there’s Meadowbrook State Parkway, named for the East Meadow Brook — which isn’t in East Meadow, it’s in Merrick.

But I don’t really live that close to a stream or creek. Though I sometimes go to Wantagh Park, where there’s a small, unnamed creek.

When the weather gets better, I may have to go to Cedar Creek Park.  It’s right next to Wantagh Park, separated by the Wantagh State Parkway.  Cedar Creek Park has a creek.

5) Fergal Lawler soon joined the brothers and became the Cranberries drummer. Today he says he enjoys listening to his early work with the group because, "Songs are like a snapshot in time." Do you often flip through photo albums and look at snapshots?

I have lots of photos stored in Google Photos and I do look at them.  I seldom print photos anymoreI don't have a lot of old photos from the pre digital age.

But Drew just found a bunch of old photos that his father had. There are pictures from all sorts of family gatherings.

6) Dolores O'Riordan showed up for her Cranberries audition dressed casually in a black tracksuit with her own Casio electronic keyboard tucked under her arm. The Hogans were impressed not only by her vocals but her no-nonsense, "let's get to work" attitude. Share a memory from one of your job interviews.

I just started a new job, having gone through numerous interviews from October through December 2025.

Two interviews stand out.

I had an interview where I met with three company representatives.  One of them, a man, had worked at AIG around the same time I was there, and knows  people I know.  He also knows someone I worked with back in the early 1990’s. It’s a small industry.

And then there was the interview for my current job.  On my resume I include a tidbit from my personal life, that  I served as a trustee on the board of my synagogue for about 10 years.  My boss’s boss, who works in Chicago, knows someone who currently sits on the board of that Long Island synagogue.

7) In 1993, when "Linger" was released, The Nannypremiered on CBS. It's remembered today for it's catchy theme song, which tells the story of "the nanny named Fran." Can you recall the lyrics to theme of one of your favorite shows?

Here we come … walking down the street …we get the funniest looks from …everyone we meet …hey, hey we’re the Monkees …

8) In 1993, gas was $1.11/gallon. Could your vehicle use a fill-up right now?

No.  I drive a Prius C.  It’s a hybrid that gets 45 miles per gallon, sometimes more. I filled the tank  about a week ago and I’ll be good for awhile. Thank goodness, because the price of gas lately …

9) Random question: How many pairs of shoes do you own?

Too many.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!
