Saturday 9

Lady Liberty

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Lady Liberty (2018)
... because it's 4th of July weekend.

Hear Barbra Streisand sing it here.

1) This song is a Valentine to the Statue of Liberty. Have you ever visited Lady Liberty?

I live on Long Island and at various times I’ve worked in lower Manhattan and Jersey City, NJ, so the Statue of Liberty has been a constant presence. I was able to see her from my doorstep when I lived in Brooklyn years ago, she was visible from my office window when I worked in Jersey City.

Back then, if I had time to kill I liked to take the Staten Island ferry for a view of the statue.

I visited the statue once with my parents and once with a group of friends.  Also went to Ellis Island to see our immigrant roots.

2) When you combine the lady herself and her pedestal, she stands 22 stories high. What's the tallest building you've ever been in?

The Twin Towers of the old World Trade Center.  I went to the observation deck once, and once I ate at Windows on the World.

I haven’t been inside the new One World Trade Center yet.  But I’ve been to the Empire Stare Building many times.

3) Her crown represents universal liberty with seven spikes for the seven seas. Without looking it up, can you name the seven seas?

It depends on how you define the term.  To Sail the Seven Seas

4) The song was written by Desmond Child, a Cuban-American from Gainesville, home of the University of Florida. In 1965, a team of UF scientists invented Gatorade. Do you have any Gatorade in your home right now?

Actually, yes.  We never drink it, but …Drew was in a production of HMS Pinafore Thursday night.  They performed at a local park, and the park staff provided drinks and snacks to the performers.  He was curious about Gatorade, so he brought some home.

5) While best known for his work with KISS, Bon Jovi and Cher, Desmond Child was nominated for an Emmy for his work on the Muppets 2003 holiday special. This morning, as we enjoy summer, what's the first Christmas carol that pops into your head?

6) Desmond wrote this song specifically for Barbra Streisand. Watching her record it was a dream come true and he found himself standing very close to her as she sang. When he asked if he was "hovering," she suggested it might be better if he gave her a little more space. Does it bother you when someone stands very close or reads over your shoulder?

Sometimes.

7) Fireworks were introduced to celebrate the 4th because they represent the "rockets red glare and bombs bursting in air." When did you most recently sing "The Star Spangled Banner?"

We went to a baseball game July 1st.

8) John Adams predicted the 4th would be observed with "pomp and parades." Does your community have a parade in honor of the day?

Not sure.  I know they do a parade on Memorial Day.  But there were fireworks displays at the county park on the 3rd and in the state park on the 4th.

9) Celebrity chef Rachael Ray says she considers mini-hamburgers, or "sliders," the All-American food. What will/did you dine on this 4th of July?

We’re having people over for a barbecue on the 5th.  It’s just the two of us in the 4th, so we went out for Chinese food.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

  1. That is nice that you could go to Ellis Island to see your ancestors. I like seeing the statue as we got into the harbor early in the morning while it was still dark. I don't have a picture. But going past it as we left on the cruise, was special since my parents were with us. Have a fun 5th!
