#skywatchfriday --- Outerbridge Crossing
People think it's called "Outerbridge Crossing" because it's on the southern tip of Staten Island, leading to Perth Amboy, New Jersey, the most remote bridge in NYC.
It was actually named for Eugenius Outerbridge, the first chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

I guess that beats the "Arthur Kill" bridge, which seems to be the original name of that bridge. But I had no clue that this was named after an actual person. "Who knew?" Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteOuterbridge is an interesting name. I wonder how his family came to it. Maybe long ago in their old country the family's role was to stand guard at the outerbridge of their walled village.
ReplyDeleteInteresting piece of trivia, and a cool bridge!!
ReplyDeleteIt is amazing how many things are named after people that we don't realize.
