Ramblings again
Well, the Long Island Railroad workers went on strike Saturday morning, Thousands of riders lost their transportation into the city. Fortunately I don’t rely on the railroad these days,
The timing was awful — the Mets and Yankees are playing a Subway Series at Citi Field. A lot of Mets fans use the railroad to get to the ballpark. The Mets arranged for shuttle buses for the Long Island fans … although, to be honest, it’s probably Yankees fans on those shuttles…the Mets can’t win for losing …
This was the fourth time in history the LIRR experienced a strike — the other strikes were in 1980 (coinciding with a NYC Transit strike), 1987 and 1994. The 1980 strike didn’t affect me, I was away at college. The 1994 strike didn’t affect me, I was living in Queens and taking the subway to work, But in January 1987 I was living on Long Island and commuting to Manhattan, a regular rider of the LIRR. So, for the duration of the strike — 11 days — I stayed with my grandmother in Queens and took the subway to work. Fun times.
This little one was enjoying our backyard sprinkler.
And this little one was hopping along the back fence
McMansion update. Last week the town board unanimously approved a change in zoning laws that reduces the size of any newly-constructed houses. The board felt Levittown was being targeted by developers and wanted to prevent the neighborhood from too much change.
We tried a new burger chain Friday night. I’m really liking Holy Burger. Lots of gluten free options.
We went to the Ducks game last night. Some idiot tried to start a fight with Drew over nothing, Ducks lost but kept it exciting through the 9th. Fireworks after the game. A fun Saturday night.
My heart sank a little when I heard about the LIRR strike. I thought about the Yankee/Met games. I remember the 1966 New York City transit strike all too well and how it affected my father, who worked in lower Manhattan and took the subway to and from work. Fortunately, I was able to walk too and from school. If it had taken place two years later, it would have been a major inconvenience for me, also.
ReplyDeleteStrikes are such an inconvenience, but of course that's the point.
ReplyDeleteDid you rescue the bird bath from the gutter? At least around here, gutter and curb items are up for grabs! I had to put on my brakes yesterday when a black rabbit ran across the road. I thought it was a Chihuahua at first seeing the ears. Escaped rabbits are hard to catch again.
