A walk around the block

When my time is limited but I need to take a walk, I walk around the block.

That’s sort of a misnomer, because a complete circle around my block is over a mile …

I walk out of my house and turn right.  I walk past my neighbors’ houses until I get to the end of the street, then I turn right.  I walk past the park — baseball diamonds, handball and basketball courts and a playground.

A few minutes later and I’m passing the entrance to the elementary school and the weird yellow farmhouse. I walk past the front of the school, and when I reach the corner I turn right, and walk along the side of the school property — more athletic fields and another playground.

And then there’s the municipal storm drainage basin.

You can actually see the basin right now.  In a month or so all the foliage will block the view.

When I reach the corner i could cross the street and go to the community pool, but instead I turn right, and continue past the storm basin until the back of the schoolyard becomes visible.

On the grass by the schoolyard I encountered some feathered friends.

Robins, my favorite bird.  (Bet you can’t guess why. 😉)

I turn right again, and continue past the schoolyard, past the county storm drainage basin, past the back side of the park.

I turn right again, onto my street.  I walk past my neighbors’ houses and end my walk at my own driveway.

Fitbit says I walked for 1.22 miles.  Not bad for a short walk.

  1. That's a good location for a walk.

  2. It's a good walk for you and a chance to observe suburban nature. My neighborhood is small and we don't have many places to walk options for the two days a week I work from home. Fortunately we haven't had snow on the ground (or nasty winds) as often as in a normal year for us.

  3. As long as it's flat, a mile doesn't seem so long a walk! If I think about it though, the mall is a mile away and I don't want to walk that far! I'll walk a mile on the treadmill though. We have old farm houses here and there, I guess they never wanted to sell, but the county or city never forced the sale either. Now they're left with a little piece not worth as much I would guess.

  4. That's the equivalent of two blocks for us here in our Estates. :) That's what I walk each day, too. My Fitbit says it's 1.32 miles.
