Star Wars:The Rise of Skywalker (spoiler alert)
So it was 1977, I was a 17 year old high school student, and my boyfriend (a college man!) told me I had to see this new movie called Star Wars.
And I loved it. The young, naive Luke Skywalker, the dashing Han Solo, the evil Darth Vader, the sage Obi-wan Kenobi, and Leia, the princess who didn’t wait around to be rescued, but grabbed a gun and jumped into the fray. Space travel, droids, and the mysterious “Force” that allowed the Jedi to do amazing things.
(As the franchise grew, as sequels and prequels were produced, that first movie was retitled “Episode 4: A New Hope”. )
What began in 1977 reaches its conclusion in The Rise of Skywalker.
I have a lot to say about this movie — spoiler alert.
The late Carrie Fisher gets top billing in this movie. She’s in only a few scenes, using footage cut from previous movies. You can tell that the dialogue was written specifically around these clips of her. But it was still good to see her final performance.
It was great to see Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian again.
The uncredited cameo by Harrison Ford was welcome, too.
As for the plot ... it was somewhat predictable but fun nevertheless.
Although we all believed that Darth Vader threw Emperor Palpatine to his death, somehow Palpatine survived and is living in exile on a remote planet, with plans to rebuild the Empire. Kylo Ren discovers Palpatine’s hiding place, and secretly plans to kill the Emperor and take his place. He wants to lure Rey to the dark side and share the throne with her. Meanwhile, Rey, Finn and Poe undertake a mission to stop Ren and the Emperor.
The great reveal ... Rey’s parents are dead. They hid her on a remote planet because her grandfather Palpatine wanted to use her to resurrect himself and the Sith.
The moment that made me cry...when Leia died. They had to kill the character, no one could replace Carrie Fisher, but it was so sad.
The great redemption... Kylo Ren. After his mother dies, he has a talk with his father and kills off his evil persona. He sacrifices himself so that Rey can live.
And the very last scene of the movie ... Rey goes to Tatooine, to the Skywalker farm ...where she declares herself to be Rey Skywalker.
My inner 17 year old is satisfied.
The only Star Wars I have scene is the original and I was like 9 or 10 years old. I am afraid, I really haven't a clue on what your saying, LOL.
ReplyDeleteLol Linda, if you haven’t seen all of the films, of course you’re not going to understand
ReplyDeleteI believe Leia was always going to die in this one. Han in the first, Luke in the second, and then all three are gone. It's too bad she wasn't around to have a bigger role in this one.
