Happy Star Wars Day!

Yes, it's Star Wars Day,  a holiday based on a truly awful pun ("May the Fourth be with you").

I may have mentioned that I am a fan.  The original movie came out in 1977.  I was in high school at the time.  My boyfriend and I saw the movie together at one of the (then-new) multiplexes.  And we saw it again.  And again.  And again.  (In that pre-cable TV world, you couldn't wait for it to be on HBO, and owning a copy of it was out of the question for most people.)

I loved the original movie and its two sequels, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.  Such memorable characters -- Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Obi-wan Kenobi, Yoda.  Such a perfect villain in Darth Vadar.  The gadgets, the space ships, the droids.  It was amazing.  It was epic.  It was fun.

And the phrases that entered our vocabulary:

"May the Force be with you."

"Do or do not, there is no 'try'."

"These are not the droids you're looking for."

"I love you" and the response "I know".

"Luke, I am your father."

And Star Wars was so beautifully parodied by Mel Brooks in Spaceballs.

There were three prequels, starting with The Phantom Menace in 1999.  I saw all three.  I wanted to like them, I really did.  But they were a bit tedious and confusing.  I didn't hate the prequels, but I didn't love them either.

but now, there is new excitement in the Star Wars world.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Due out Christmas 2015.

With the original characters, the original cast.

I am psyched.

  1. Can't wait for the new one.

ThinkGeek had StarWars wedding bands, one inscribed 'I love you', the other with 'I know'. Guess who gets the second one! if we ever got them ;)
