This and that
So the other day I posted a photo of what I thought was the Levittown water tower as seen from my bedroom window.
I was finally able to get a look in daylight. To my chagrin, it’s not the water tower. Clearly it’s not.
It’s the county hospital. The hospital is over two miles away, but it’s the tallest building in the area: 19 stories tall.
Do you see it? Right near where the tree meets the roof.
Yeah, I should have known.
Did you catch The Golden Girls special the other night? I can’t believe the show is 40 years old. It was such a funny show. And now that I am older I appreciate it in a way I couldn’t in my 20’s and 30’s.
Thanksgiving is coming, which means a lot of socializing and a lot of cooking. Last year, you may remember, I agonized over how to cook the ham we got to supplement the turkey at our Friendsgiving. I’m much calmer this year.
Local political scandals are brewing …
The first one affects me because it’s in the Town of Hempstead, where I live. Our town is governed by a “Supervisor” (a fancy name for mayor) and a council. We just held an election for Supervisor this month, for a term to begin in January. The scandal? Last summer the Supervisor decided he did wanted to run for a judgeship (yes, we elect our local judges). He resigned as Supervisor, and the council chose a new Supervisor- who was able to run for office as an incumbent. And yes, the new guy won. There’s a lawsuit pending, but it won’t change anything …
The second scandal is much more serious. It’s all over the news, made the front page of the newspaper, and there’s even involvement from our state’s Attorney General.
The Town of Huntington also had an election for Supervisor. Normally in Huntington the Conservative Party will cross endorse the Republican candidate and the Working Families Party will cross endorse the Democrat. But this year the Working Families Party ran their own candidate. Or did they? The “candidate” was an 83-year-old woman who had no idea her name was on the ballot. She got about 1500 votes — which, if given to the Democrat, would have changed the results of the election. The Democrats are understandably fuming. This one could get interesting.
Considering all the corruption in Washington, our local scandals are not surprising.
