Ukraine

We live in a scary world.  Ukraine is the new Sudetenland. I hope NATO holds together.

And we have a former President who thinks Putin is “very savvy”.  One more reason I am glad he has been consigned to the trash bins of history.

My paternal grandparents, who died before I was born, hailed from Belarus.  Being Jewish, they could not claim citizenship.   But that part of the world is, nevertheless, my ancestral home.  My father sometimes spoke of the little village on the Dnieper River. The river flows from Russia through Belarus and Ukraine to the Black Sea.

In the coming days I am sure I will hear place names that would have been familiar to my grandparents.

Please let the Ukraine stand strong.  Please let peace come soon.

  1. My paternal grandfather came from Pinsk, a city which is part of Belarus but it has changed hands numerous times. I echo your thoughts. Putin's statement about denazifying Ukraine is most chilling in light of Ukraine's President being Jewish. We have entered such a dangerous chapter in history and we all must stand with Ukraine. 1. A Jewish President who lost family in the Holocaust, who is equally fluent in Ukrainian and Russian, and who, as an actor, was very popular with Rusdian audiences. I think Putin miscalculated, there are massive protests in Moscow.

  2. I am so saddened that it's come to this. Why? Usurping territory doesn't generally go well. At least, that's what I want to believe.
