Saturday 9
Ja-Da
Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: Ja-Da (1918)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
3) In addition to newspapers, magazines were a big deal in 1918. Women turned to publications like Ladies Home Journal and McCall's for trends and tips about fashion and housekeeping. Do you have any printed magazines in your home now?
The Stranger was released when I was in high school. One of my teachers had been in Billy Joel’s class at Hicksville High School, and told us a few stories …
And of course
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) The lyrics tell us the melody is soothing. What calms you when you're upset or anxious?
She sits in my lap and purrs … and all is right with the world …
2) There was a lot going on in 1918 – like WWI and the Spanish flu pandemic – that left people upset and anxious. In those days, radio wasn't yet a staple in American homes so people received their news through newspapers. Today with podcasts and 24 hour cable news and social media and other news outlets available, do you ever feel like taking a break from current events?
I’m a news junkie; people ask if I’m ok when I take a break from the news.
3) In addition to newspapers, magazines were a big deal in 1918. Women turned to publications like Ladies Home Journal and McCall's for trends and tips about fashion and housekeeping. Do you have any printed magazines in your home now?
Yes. Just one, Prevention. For some reason, they send me a print copy when all I wanted was an electronic subscription.
4) Today schoolchildren often learn "Ja-Da" because it's easy to sing and play. Was music part of your grade school curriculum?
Of course! We had general music, and I also sang in the chorus, took viola lessons and played in the orchestra.
5) Composer Bob Carleton published more than 500 songs in his career. He had no songwriting partner, handling the words and lyrics himself. What's your favorite song? Was it written by a single composer or a songwriting team?
I don’t have a favorite, I have a lot of songs I really, really like.
This one came to mind today.
The Stranger was released when I was in high school. One of my teachers had been in Billy Joel’s class at Hicksville High School, and told us a few stories …
6) Bob got his start in his hometown of St. Louis, playing piano in his parents' saloon. When you think of St. Louis, what comes to mind?
And of course
7) In 1918, Americans were buying more cars and Studebakers were a familiar sight on the streets and highways. Today that name is mostly forgotten. Can you think of a brand that used to popular but has disappeared?
My first car was a hand-me-down from my father … a 1972 Olds Cutlass that I affectionately called “the rust bucket”. Oldsmobile ceased to exist in 2004.
8) During WWI, Americans were familiar with "Meatless Days." Back then we were encouraged to cut back on the consumption of meat as a patriotic gesture to help the American and Allied troops. Today "Meatless Monday" highlights health and the environment. Think about your diet. Do you try to eat more grains, fruits and vegetables?
My eating habits have changed drastically in the last few years. Two reasons for this:
(1) I started taking Wegovy. It’s a miracle drug. But even “miracles” need help — for the medication to be fully effective you also have to eat a healthy diet and get some exercise. Wegovy just makes it easier to do those things,
(2) shortly after I started weight loss medications, I was diagnosed with celiac disease. That’s an autoimmune disorder triggered by exposure to gluten in food. For simplicity’s sake I say I’m allergic to gluten. A lot of the foods that used to cause me to overindulge now trigger unpleasant symptoms. So it’s much easier to avoid them. When dieting for weight loss I could rationalize an indulgence. But when faced with swift and uncomfortable consequences, somehow that overindulgence isn’t as appealing …
Oh, and I lost 125 pounds on Wegovy. It’s made a huge difference in my life,
9) Random question: Where did you get the shirt you are wearing right now?
I’m wearing a concert t shirt I bought at MSG when we saw Billy Joel in February 2023.
Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

Does Billy Joel write his own songs or does he have a song writing partner?
ReplyDeleteIt’s all him. No partner.
DeleteI saw MSG and thought of the food additive that can mess you up. That is great that you have lost that much weight. My problem is keeping it on and keeping my muscle. I went from112 in May to 107 this month and my doctor is sending me back to PT. I probably don't absorb nutrients well. I am glad you are feeling much better!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Billy Joel and it's funny but that song came up on my car play Thursday when I was running errands!
ReplyDeleteGood job with your weight loss journey. I avoid all RX meds but then again I've never had a weight issue and I eat mostly plant-based foods so...i don't get a lot of animal fat in my diet. Now...I do need to cut down on sweets though!
I enjoyed the answers to your questions.
Wow! You really did great on Wegovy. I used another a few years ago and lost about 40 lbs, but it caused me a lot of digestive issues so I had to stop. My daughter tried a few of them and she also had issues, but much more severely than I did. She had to make a few trips to the ER over it. My husband recently tried Ozempic and it has him all messed up, too. We are apparently a family not meant to use them. Sigh. Love your song choice. The Stranger is my favorite Billy Joel album.
ReplyDeleteThe digestive issues …that’s how I discovered my celiac disease. I thought it was the Wegivy, it wasn’t.
DeleteOh yes, the pets can make everything better. They save me a lot of money on therapy. I don't have a favorite song either. I love so many. I love your weight loss journey stories. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

My brother tried one of those weight loss things for his diabetes and had major issues, so I am assuming I probably would too, since we tend to react to the same things. My aunt, however, used Monjaro (?) and lost loads of weight on it. Now she says she takes it like every 3 weeks as a control or something.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your weight loss! That's awesome. A lot of Cardinals on your post today. Not only the dirty birds logo itself but there are cardinals under your cat. As a Cub fan, I find this disturbing. ;)
ReplyDeleteHubby and I have a Niece and Nephew who lived in Saint Louis.
